VHF radios handheld vs fixed????

Hi fellas

Anyone use or know anything about the handheld vhf radios and how they compare to the fixed units. Will need to get one or the other soon... so any info will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mullows

Range

The fixed radio will have a range of approx 30miles as against 4-5 on a hand held set.The hand helds go through batteries quickly while its not a worry with the fixed one as its connected to the boats battery

I throw my hand held (UHF)

I throw my hand held (UHF) in the boat as an extra saftey measure if i can't raise someone on the 27meg.  Mobile phone too however some of the spots i fish are out of mobile (normal mobile - dont have CDMA etc) range.

Battery is no problem as mine is rechargable (that being said I'm about to get my ni-cad repacked as it is not holding a charge)

Fixed radio is no doubt better (range and signal strength wise) and that would be the preferred option..

Go the fixed option

cheers

Thanks fellas

I figured that the fixed would be the better option but wasn't sure of the range on the handheld.

Fixed it is then.

Handheld 5 watts - Fixed 25 watts.

Hi Mullows,
usually handheld's are only 5 watts and fixed are 25 watts, also the handheld's have very small antenna's unlike the fixed.
I would think that you could always attach an handheld to a large fixed antenna, but it has only a fraction of the output power, receiving with a fixed antenna would be fine on either set as it depends on the power output of the sender!
Handheld's have no real price advantage over fixed and are sometimes more expensive.

Flungy.
