How many hours do you put on your boat motor in a year?
Submitted by CCC on Fri, 2011-11-11 19:12
110hrs on the outboard over the last 6 months and it was in Perth for a couple of months so really about 110hrs in 4 months. Based on those numbers I'll need 3 services a year, bugger knows how many hours I will clock up once I get my new gear for chasing billies.
How many hours have you done??

None so far
For that very reason I don't own a boat. Mind you I spend a lot of time keeping my vehicle maintained so I can go fishing. More than I would like but it's necessary and worthwhile.

Same as Dodgy, 200-300 for the same reason.
Which poses the next question, would you pay the same price for a great boat thats 4 years old with 800 hours on the clock, or the same boat with 200 hours?

Interesting question one i dont have an answer for. I've only done 3 full days trawling this year so if i get into billies like i think i' m going to i will clock up some massive hours....
Whats the likely life span of a well serviced 150 Yamaha 4stroke.

no different as alot of guys
no different as alot of guys who bottom bashand run their engines the whole day just keeping it in idle, that can equate to alot of hours if your on the water for like 10 hours a day and only traveling for half that

Most of my hours has been traveling distance down the coast to get into creeks or big trips. I put 30 hrs on it running up the coast in the kimberly clocking up 500+km in 6 days. Always shut the engine off when drift as services are very expensive up here. Works out about $9 hour running cost excluding fuel

180- 200 ish . motor does stay on the entire day though.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

motor is good for 4000-5000 hours if you consult the guru's......
end of the day it's a cost of fishing so enjoy the benefits our lifestlye allows us........

Ive just knocked over a year in the stabi
and I did just over 300 hours. I just dont need much of an excuse to get out onto the water.
I don't do a lot of trolling at all outside of a few days in exxy and most of mine is runs to rotto for diving in summer and th 40 meter marks in winter. Basically - on the water at any op!

I'm on the water every weekend unless the weather say's no! So I would say conservatively about 200 hours, probably a lot more. I'm with Damo 6230 and I don't measure the cost but measure the enjoyment.

100 or so
but just curious though why anyone would leave the engine running even when drifting etc? Not a criticism but a curiousity?

The same reason a taxi goes 5 times longer than
a shopping trolley / school run car. You do more damage stopping and starting than running all day.In answer to the how long it will last depends on to many factors imo.I know a boat that blew a powerhead at 700 ish hours and i know of a cat in exxy that 8000 hours plus on twin 90s hondas. All comes down to how you use them and how you treat them.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

good point
but that sort of wear comes more in an engine left to cool down to ambient and oil drain away from valve gear, as opposed to stopped for 30 minutes while still warm and wet (so to speak).
But still a valid point.
Still I rather switch mine off if it 10 or 15+.

we never drift for more than a minute or two
So i would rather a few extra hours than going to start it and the battery being flat or the starter motor being flogged out from starting it every few minutes. If on the odd time we get the sea anchor out the motor does go off and i isolate the starter battery but it doesnt happen very often.

Running 2 electric reels
and all the electronics I'm sure would drain the batteries as well, thats why the motors run while fishing and hours add up

Hey Smash, sometimes when you
Hey Smash, sometimes when you find a good school of fish on the sounder, then if you have one person on the controls so you sit over the fish maneuvering the boat backwards and forwards to sit on the fish you have great results.
We normally do this when we look for schools of Sambos to jig, taking turns to fish and be on the controls.

I was told by the head mech
I was told by the head mech down at chivers that on the yammies all they need is a service once a year, really regardless of hours(within reason). As with allrounders point, an engine that is used a lot can often be in better condition than one that sits for long periods at a time not used. Unless you are running in dirty creek water a lot I would think once a year is enough - impeller is the only concern if it gets chewed out with sand. I put 300 on my etec in the first year, but this year because of a failed exxy trip i have done bugger all, hoping to change that in december though.

Engine hours
I put 430 hrs in the first year on my current boat (3 years ago) but have since slowed down to about 200 due to change of job and I use my 4.2m tinnie for my pots now instead of the big boat. In the first year we steamed up to Exxy for Gamex which put some hours on her!!
I bought it with 2500hrs on. Have rebuilt the port motor and the stb still going strong. Serviced twice year with a hull lift and blast/antifoul/legs serviced once a year.
8.5m FRP cat with 2 x 200hp volvo turbo/intercooled diesels.
My basic rule of thumb for general maintenance costs is $1000 per metre per year.

hrs per year
I went into a boat shop and in general conversation ask the guy when should i service my boat keeping in mind that i get out alot!!
He asked how many hrs a yr do u think u wil do and i replied around 300 at a guess.
He told me that i would be lucky to do 300 and most poeople would avg. 100hrs a yr.
11mths later i was back in there to get oil and saw the same guy, he asked how many hrs i had done and started to grin ( could read his mind and see that he was
waiting for me to reply about 100 or so ) , His grin quickly droped of when i replied over 500 at the moment.
By then end of the next month i had put another 35-40hrs on it
My motor runs form when the boat goes in to when it comes out so abit of the time is at idal.

I seriously doubt most people
I seriously doubt most people average 100hrs a year. Pretty sure I saw figures of 40hrs per year bandied around before as the projected use for recreational outboards.
Have a look online at how many boats for sale are say 10yrs old and have just 200hrs on them!

I've done a bit under 400 hours since November last year, but a lot of this would be at idle or reverse.
