How much does a fish shrink??? (circa 1958)

Found this interesting table in a 2nd edition "The Anglers' Omnibus" by Roger Hungerford. (circa 1958 I think!)

How much does a fish shrink?

"How much does a fish lose through dehydration, loss of bodily water content, after being caught?

Men who have attempted to set up dehydration tables have found their task difficult , because the co-operation of many fishermen is needed.

But now the job has been done, and the honour of ferreting out the figures goes to an energetic and persevering Australian statitician.

So for those interested in settling fish-shrinkage arguments with something better than conjecture, following is an acurate chart, compiled under conditions as nearly average as possible."

Not sure just how accurate it is, but makes for interesting reading on weight loss after 6 hours, and 12 hours.

Cheers.

Browny.

 not too sure on weight

not too sure on weight shrinkage . if you keep your fish in a brine or chilled on ice there shouldnt be any at all. however there have been many times i have measured a fish just after capture and then done it again once home and there can be sometimes 1 to 2 cm diff.

always, if we catch a dhui  makes sure it is at least 3" or 3cm over the legal limit, as dhui does shrink.  also if you catch a cray that is just size, (guage moves slightly) when cooked the shell does shrink, so be careful on that one also, we were caught out on that, so quickly ate the cray, even though it was legal when we caught it,)  so now guage must be slightly over cray.

Caught in Port Headland

I had a friend that caught a rankin cod that was only 1cm over the minimum. He was warned to throw it back by the skipper due to shrinkage. He chose not to and he got pinged by fisheries at the ramp for being 1cm under the minimum. Dumb bastard!

Are you sure about that? I thought there was only a bag limit on rankin, no size limit.
