How would you like your recreational fishing license money spent?

Following the introduction of the Recreational Fishing from a Boat license in March last year, the contribution made by recreational fishers to the Recreational Fishing Account (RFA) increased significantly. To date, over 110,000 boat fishing licenses have been sold. This leaves recreational fishing in a prosperous position, as these license monies will be put towards funding mangement, research and project initiatives to benefit recreational fishers across the state.

Recfishwest is seeking the views of Western Australia's rec fishers on how they would like their license money spent?

You can make your views known by completing a quick online survey.

Yes - I noticed that 'policing the laws we currently have' was not one of the options that you could select.

But I'm sure a free fisheries usb stick would make way more difference than that would.......

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Lol, isnt that the most frickin ridiculous waste of money you ever heard.

Giving away some free crab gauges like they used too would be way more appreciated.

Also have to agree the stupidity of not having the "policing" option.

I don't think it's a ridiculous waste of money at all, as most people that fish are not up to date with current regs. The amount of people that come into a tackle store and have no idea about regs or go by what they think they are or what a mate told them is ridiculous. If something small, cheap and easy to use like a USB drive loaded with everything on it was sent out with every licence sold/renewed then there really is no excuse for the majority of people (assuming most people these days are at least slightly computer educated) knowing what is what.

I would think that Recfishwest haven't included "the policing option" as they are fully aware of the general thought of rec anglers as needing more/doing more policing. This is the thing, if we want more officers then they have to be paid for, and some of the dollars from rec licences surely will go towards employing more officers, but I would definitely prefer my Rec fishing licence money to be fully spent on Rec fishing in the form of increasing education and facilities and also more proper research so that we actually have half an idea of what the hell is going on with our fisheries.

Just out of interest are you guys Recfishwest members?

mate if they can't use the internet to find what they need they ain't gonna use a usb drive.

Fisheries pdfs and brochures have all the info and are easily available. USB = gimmick IMO.

As a 12 year old in 95 I could figure out what was legal or not without the net just by reading books and the fisheries guide, there is no real excuse for ignorance.

Happy to be proven wrong regarding the USB, but think its as good as throwing money away.

Not a RFW member, but as a license holder happy to have my say

Agree with Ruby - I actually thought I received a booklet with fisheries rules with my license? Maybe I didnt.

In either case, the information is very readily available, and a USB would quickly be wiped of any fisheries content, and used by people for whatver they would normally use one for.

The fish ruler stickers, and the crab gauges - I agree - that has merit.

Did half then gave up in disgust, what a complete load of crap.

If they are going to spend money let it be on worth while projects that are researched and better managed than Carnarvons new boat ramps.  more to come on that very shortly.

How many topics do we get on

Wed, 2011-08-31 15:21

How many topics do we get on here from people asking bag/size limits/what is this fish? lots. A USB drive is a good suggestion as it means that people can save the info straight onto their computer. I don't think it's a great suggestion nor a solution, just a decent idea. In this situation I would prefer that all relevant info, in the form of booklets and size sticker guide is mailed out with a licence, but this may not be practical.

I think the best thing OUR money can go towards is research/data collection but most importantly, education.

On the topic of Recfishwest, I urge everyone to join as they are our voice. If Recfishwest were'nt around then Rec fishing sure would be in a sorry state. Everyone please have a look at their website, see what they have done and will continue to do for YOU and join.

Hi All,

For those interested:

The views of the recreational sector on the issue of fisheries compliance are WELL KNOWN to both Recfishwest and the Department of Fisheries.

Therefore no need for Recfishwest to collect data on the issue.

The CHALLENGE is to find new and innovative ideas that will compliment existing mangement strategies.

It's not all about compliance...

Why arnt we stocking our Dams

Wed, 2011-08-31 17:43

Why arnt we stocking our Dams like over east.

Australian Bass would thrive in our dams, are a native species (unlike trout and redies) and would take alot of pressure off the salt water species.

How Much Money We're Talking About

Thu, 2011-09-01 01:00

I'd just love to see an audit of how much money The Government gets from our license fee's and how much is spent on complience, administration and other associated costs and I wouldn't mind betting that we're talking about a bit of loose change at the end of the day that can be used on enhansment projects.
