Huge stingray..info required:)

 Hi Guys,

Finally, after losing a couple of big rays we landed this beauty last night. Just wondering if anyone could provide more info on it. I believe it is a Dasyatis chrysonota but am unsure whether it is male or female as this plays a large part in the weight of the ray. Unfortunately we didn't measure the disc width but would estimate it to have been at least 150cm..It was released after a couple of photos,

All the best, Scott

Sexing rays are sharks is

Sexing rays and sharks is easy, as they are sexually dimorphic.

Have a look under the base of the tail near the pectoral fins. Males will have claspers, which basically look like two big long sausages. Females will not have these.

Worldfisher everything you post is usually above average size.

How long did that take to get in and on what gear?

Smooth Stingray

This looks like the Smooth Stingray Dasyatis brevicaudata to me.  You didn't say where you caught it, but I'm assuming south-west.  Dasyatis chrysonota occurs only in southern Africa.

Great catch mate , disc width of 150cm is 112.95kg . On those bigger fish a few cm can make a big differance on the weight.

What a monster. Bet that put you in a world of pain by the end of the fight!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

 thanks for the comments

 thanks for the comments guys,

Glenn thanks very much for that info...it was caught from Dongara.

It took around an hour to land on 50lb braid through to a 100lb mono leader of 4 metres and a wire trace of 150kg. The rod and reel james was using was nothing special..I think a shakspeare surf caster and average reel....the hardest bit is getting them through the gutter near to the beach as everytime some line is gained the force of the receding waves makes holding the fish almost impossible. It was pretty lively as we released it back into the waves..
