A lot of people call this a gurnard, is this the fish in question.

This fish has one of the nastiest stings, best to cut them off and let them go.

Even so, they are not bad eating, but one sting will be enough to say "it's not worth it" believe me.

It has 13 spines, and every one of them can cause you to pass out, be disorientated, have a heart attack, or just curl up and want to die.

best remedy, HOT water, coffee, tea etc, this gells the venom, other best remedy: cut em loose.

I was on my own for a quick fish at the back of Garden Island one morning , pulled up the Gurnard and went to flick it off, BANG, got me and within 2 minutes I was in so much pain, dizzy, sweating, loss of balance nausia etc. I headed for Cockburn and almost got lost even tho I'd been there hundreds of times.

I thought I would die but after about an hour started to regain my senses and landed the boat. NEVER again.

They have like a membrane

They have like a membrane that covers the spines, the venom is stored inside the membrane so you always get the full dose unlike the Flathead (I find the small Flathead are the worst)

Treat them as you would a Cobler and cut the spines off asap. The gill spines are as bad.

If you do get stung, pour hot water and as I said earlier, coffee or tea on the sting area, this helps to "gell'' the venom.

Good Gurnarding!!
