I have my doubts

Was watching that 'Hook,Line and Sinker' programme on 72 today. They did a so called economy test between a 300hp 4st Yammie against an old 175hp 2st Johnno Ocean Runner. They travelled twelve miles out to the continental shelf, three hours of trolling and then twelve miles back and then filled the tanks to the top. The boats were a 21ft barcrusher (brand new) against an approx. 21ft Haines (older version). Not really comparable.

The yammie used about 60lts compared to the Johnno using nearly 160lts!!! I find that very hard to believe. Considering I have a 93 Johnno 150 2st and I have gone 25 miles out done a whole days fishing including trolling, drifting back and forth and then headed back  and not used more than half that (ie. 80lts). I know that Yamaha is one of their sponsors but come on, let's be real about it otherwise their credibility will be shot to the sheet house.

I changed from a 95 115hp 2 stroke Johnson, to a brand new 4 stroke 115 Suzuki, and my fuel bill halved .

had my doubts too.

I reckon they didn't fill the bar crusher all the way to the top. Plus who knows about the condition of the johnno. Anyway the 300 is a fairly good motor. I was waiting for the bertram beast to be released.

my boat weighs around 3 ton

Sun, 2013-02-17 15:49

my boat weighs around 3 ton loaded and is powered by twin 150 etec 2 strokes. i took it 35 nautical miles out off mandurah, fished all day cruising round to different spots etc searching for ground, did probabl 10 minutes all up at full throttle through the estuary, and left motors running the whole time we were offshore. it only used $135 of fuel. pretty sure yamaha are telling porkies on this one

i still wouldn't mind a yamaha powered barcrusher though

Mon, 2013-02-18 20:30

that is pretty amazing-rough calc without the cruising around is 70 miles, thats 4 hours at 18 knots for under 100 litres, <25 litres an hour.

And thats without the running around out there

Etecs are a totally different

Mon, 2013-02-18 12:38

Etecs are a totally different motor than old carbied 2 smokes though. I replaced a 120 v4 evinrude with a 115 yami 4 stroke and nearly halved our fuel bill.

They're not that bad

Mon, 2013-02-18 20:08

My old girl is running like a charm. She still runs the VRO and averages 1.3km/l cruising at 23knots. I have however, just replaced the fuel pump as I was getting the warning horn coming on at trolling speed to say there was no oil. It was amusing to note that if I had got it done locally, the pump alone would have cost $800 plus installation. Bought it from Boats.net and installed it for nearly half that at $430. I only use original equipment on the motor therefore I did not have a problem buying it overseas.

In saying that, I would not mind at some stage, getting an etec to replace the Johnno.

used to have evenrudes

Tue, 2013-02-19 06:14

Used to have 2 cylinder 60 hp evenrudes on the cat, would burn 170 litre of premix in about 3 hours, replaced them with a pair of 60 hp Yammies and flat out use less than 18 litres per hour , and trolling only 2 litre per hour( both moters running). The rudes seemed to use as much fuel trolling or crusing as flat out. Running to the islands from Bremer, the 3 hour trip was done so often that the 170 liter fuel use got to expensive.the Yammies will do the trip on a bit over 60 litres.( carbureted moters in both cases ). was supprised to discvover I used less fuel trolling with both moters running , than using only one moter to troll. The boat is an original Harris shark cat.
