Submitted by ctan1968 on Wed, 2013-05-01 17:39
Hi all,
I'm in the market to buy a new ice box for the boat.
Are there any opinions out there for brands? Looking for something between 80-100L. Are they all much of a muchness?
Thank you in advance
Chris

xtreme all the way, we used our 210L on a trip last week for beers, food and fish and we still had full ice blocks after a week.

I have 2 xtreme coolers, and rate them as the best eskys you can buy.
I even bought one as a factory second, but I can't fault it!

Hi Chris
There are a few things to look out for when buying a cooler box. Here are my tips.
1. Buy a box for your needs. There are plenty of sizes out there and some cater for the camper and some for the fisher. The designs are specific to needs.
2. Make sure the cooler you purchase is fully insulated. this means that every internal wall/space is filled with expansion foam. All Xtreme Coolers are fully filled.
3. Look at the lid design, most coolers have a recessed lid which invades the inner space a little. Worth pointing out iff you think you can fill it to the top with stuff and can't close the lid.
4. Make sure you get a 5 year no questions asked warranty.
5. Be prepared to look after it. A bit of love will see you never needing another of the same size.
6. Latches and hinges. There are many different types. Make sure you know the + and - of the hinge and latch design.

5 years or so and mines still going strong, barley any wear and looks like new, I use it constantly - its stocked with drinks and block ice out the back verandah (need a bigger fridge) and been thrown around and in and out of the boat etc on trips and the hinges/catches etc have not given an inch (usually the first thing to go on all my previous coolers).
Great value for the quality, given my experience with them I wouldn't buy anything else.
Cheers Paul

Ice boxes
Just to add some thing on the side. I have had a purely boat esky ( 200 L ) for 10-12 years now, it was 2nd hand from the Esperance area but unfortunatly doesn't have a name nat all on it. The lid ISN'T hinged making it very easy to use as a bait board and a filleting area when the time arises, It is an industrial stlye esky ( abalone ) made from blue high density plastic, i know it is now 20+ years old as i inherited it from some one whose boat could not accomadate it.
The main point here is convenience whilst boat fishing in the Kimberleys, where smooth conditions allow filleting on the boat but the convenience of not taking the bait, pliers, knife, lures etc off every time you wish to put something in or take out of your esky.
Mine is now long in the tooth and would love to know if there are any Ice boxes with a non hinged lid, because that is what suits my style of fishing and the old girl is de-laminating now, so a new esky of that style would be a winner.
Dave do you guys do anything like what i have suggested ? Having not seen extreme coolers in KNX, i take it they are fibreglass ? Would last a lifetime i am sure. The old girl is 970mm long X 600mm wide and 560mm high, if it was fibre glass i am sure i would have more deck space. Obviously a boat esky only for most but that is what i am chasing !

Advertising
HAHA proves i don't look, i just saw an ad for extreme coolers and looking at them i reckon fibreglass they are not. Have been on the site for a year or so and generally if not looking for something particular i don't see it. Only responding to the esky forum had me seeing the ad for the first time.
That can give the marketing/advertising men a challenge!

Had a Tropicool
And the Ice in Karratha in summer last about 36hrs. Makes it tricky for a Friday to Sunday fish out to shacks etc.
Borrowed a mates smaller Xtreme down in mandurah for Crabs. The tropicool is to big for that. Had 1 bag ice slurry for the crabs. Was fishing arvo late so didnt bother to cook/clean them the night off return.
Got up in the morning to cook them and I was worried regarding ice melting (as in my old Tropi) but was amazed that the slurry was almost like new.
Didnt want to give the esky back but will get a new one when needed and it will be an Xtreme.
