Canning river mulloway?
Submitted by Extend on Mon, 2013-04-15 17:10
Me and my brothers were fishing at salter point in the canning river late last year. Any way long story short we were using bream gear (4-6lb braid+ 6lb leader) and 2.5in motor oil grubs.
My brother is twitching the lure towards shore and hits a "snag". Anyway the snag starts to move fast for about 20m and after a huge swirl and splash spits the hook. The jig head hook comes back very bent.
My question is, has anybody caught mulloway that far down the canning? I might start my very own "Canning River Monsters" and see if i can get this mulloway on plastic and slightly heavier gear.

It could have been a Mulloway
It could have been a Mulloway mate, but its more likely that you just snagged a Ray of some discription.

Yeah mate the're deffintley
Yeah mate the're deffintley are mullas there. I've caught them all the way up to kent st weir.
But there are also big eagles rays there (ive seen them too 1m+ diameter).
Could have also been a big flattie. They often feel like a dead weight for a few seconds untill they realise they are hooked and then they go nuts.

could be
Thanks for they replys guys, i have not seen a flathead large enough to make a swirl that big. the other thing we did notice was that the leader was roughed up a few cm past the jig head.
I also had another exprience saturday just gone, where i was fishing under the mt henry at the entrance to bull creek. I was fishing with 2.5in motoroil grub and had a fish load up the rod in a big way, two head shakes and it bit the leader off so i lost my jig head. I was rather angry and just makes me want to find out what it was all the more.

I've also seen large Tailor
I've also seen large Tailor (50cm+) caught right up the Swan (near Guilford Rd bridge), so I wouldn't rule that out. Why not chuck in a heavy line too with a big bait while flicking next?
