Importing a boat from the US

Hi everyone

I'm looking at purchasing the Sea Hunt Victory 225.  Around $10k saving if imported from the US.

Has anyone any experience of this (or know anyone who has)?

Thanks so much....

What would you like to know ?

I would recommend getting a broker you know is trust worthy. Pay the extra don,t try and do your self unless you are super confident.

In the end the price can be line ball between getting one in and buying local.

I know a work associate that tried this path, don't know the full details but there certainly were some issues ( electrically )

He spent 5or 6k on it but in the end he cut his loses and traded it. Buyer beware.

Doing it now

My 225cc key west is on the way now.
Find the boat you want yourself then contact a broker here,I have used Aron from west coast boat imports.
First contact with him his guy in the us approached the seller and negotiated a figure for me once we agreed on a price inspections started.
First thing was to get the trailer measured for width because if it was over 2.5 meters it could not be registered here that was the first thing done and come under 2.5 meters.
Next west coasts surveyor in the us did a sea trial taking photos of RPM and speed photos of gps and all gauges operating, then did a full twelve page inspection from top to bottom of boat including trailer inspection and photos of everything.
With the motor they have ther own computer which they plug into engines computer to double check engine hours to what hours were advertised.
With the survey they even give you a independent valuation at current market and new replacement costs.
Once I had received this report and was happy with it I gave west coast boat imports a bank cheque for 80 percent of the cost of boat landed transit takes approx 6 weeks max.
Trough this whole process I have recieved emails each week of progress and photos of the boat shrink wrapped and ready for shipping.
If you contact Aron let him know you were speaking to me Colin and tell him I have the key west in transit.
P.S I have save over 30k by importing this boat to what I can purchase the Same boat here for.
Hope this has been some help.
Cheers Colin

But I'm in Phuket at the moment for 3 more weeks and there on my computer at work.
It will be here before Gnaraloo but not taking it as I won't know the boat yet and had enough sea time with it.
So my other boat will be doing Gnaraloo again then it will be on the market for a new home.
Mmmmmm the beers cold here.

Cheers Colin

The big insurers are having a hell of a lot of failures with grey imports and are getting very tired with paying out for rebuilding hulls. Check on the insurance hassles as well and be aware that policies could be changed soon that may make things even harder.

Big issue is to do with build quality issues.

IMO buyer beware.

Info!

can you provide some more info on this Rod, where can we find this? What sort of failures?

But seems a bit odd though cos you cant insure a boat against "poor build quality" and structural failure I believe is excluded in most policies except if there is impact?

Hey guys new to forum.....be gentle!

Recently imported a 24" pro line from Florida.  Found the boat through yacht world.com ill dig out the brokers details.

Check your insurance paperwork...... The clowns managed to drop my boat along with 2 other boats in transit. Apparently the other blokes went for the boat insurance but not boat and trailer....no damage to my boat but did get a new trailer!

Apart from that wee hiccup it's been a great buy. definately paid off getting the sea trials as mentioned before and a reputable broker made things a hell of a lot smoother than others I've heard of.

Good luck

Carl
