cant see them allowing you to open up a boily shop on lizzy key mate you will just have to struggle with outrageous shed prices where you are , its a joke (sorry I know you are small business trying to make good) maybe you should open 1 of the 20 coffee shops that are going to be there b. Lizzy key is our biggest waste of money this state has ever spent

Yarloop

Wed, 2016-01-20 22:16

Why should the $2m be going to Yarloop residents? Wouldn't it be used for rebuilding government buildings ect there?

If my house burns down should I get the tax payers to pay for it?

Don't get me wrong, I really do feel for anyone that has lost property down there (not to mention lives, stock, pets, personal possessions - that is impossible to measure) but Peter, do you think the government (all of us) should pay for all the losses?

Growth & Investment

Wed, 2016-01-20 22:54

It's all about growth and investment in the future Willlo, the road from Exmouth to Broome has never been travelled by me (but I would love to!) but that cost a huge amount of money! With the same thinking we should have never of spent that money as you can fly to Broome for a few hundred. But that road sure generates a lot of money via tourism and WA people travelling. Pretty good investment really.

It really sux that Yarloop and the surrounding areas were hit with such a devastating fire.

Bit should we restrain from progress in case something like this happens?

Well said Matt. Yep I'm all for hepling out our country friends it's a big state and everyone should get a slice of the pie. Unfortunately the big spenders are interested in the city not country towns unless there's a buck to be made there (think mining) But I also believe a lot of money has been squanderd by not only this gov but previous gov's as well. Infrastructure is the key to this state escpecially roads.

Thu, 2016-01-21 06:11

Yarloop belongs to Alcoa. It will never be rebuilt as its within their "inner zone".

As stated above, Elizabeth quays is an investment that will generate revenue. Shelling out cash to those who were not insured generates nothing.

What is the return for investment with Lizzy Quay as opposed to Yarloop?

Property sales, rental, gst for decades Vs a town full of businesses and houses that would have/should have been insured?

Close call

Thu, 2016-01-21 08:18

Most forget that the big desalination plant that supplies water to all is situated close to Binningup, would be a different call on priorities then. Most of the money will go to restoring infrastructure that has been burnt out and providing services for the other 40-50 houses that weren't burnt down, don't they deserve to be looked after as well

Never been a fan of the money losing Dickies Stick, [the bell tower] or Betty's Jetty [Elizabeth Quays; or sinking Perth railway station because someone thought it was a good idea at the time and in the long run costs all of us a vast sum of money.

 My point was that Alcoa

Thu, 2016-01-21 11:13

My point was that Alcoa don't want Yaloop there. It falls under area B of the SPPP. They will not rebuild anything they own, and will see this as an opportunity to solve a problem. Why throw good money at something that isn't going to happen. Yaloop is finished unfortunately.

Debono would say your Wearing the financial hat in this case.

Thu, 2016-01-21 08:30

You're looking at this from a purely financial perspective.  The Government administrates the collective taxes of the state of which the residents of Yarloop contribute.  Rebuild the town  BUT not in the inner zone near Alcoa  Residents of Yarloop have long complained of illness or down to being located too  close to the refinery.  The one thing that should come out of this is the relocation of the town site away from Alcoa... Never a better opportunity than now. Alcoa should come to the party. .. damage and lots to their houses and their replacement would be a tax write of to their company. .. id they actually pay any tax that is.... lol

The town of Yarloop was there

Thu, 2016-01-21 21:19

The town of Yarloop was there way before Alcoa!

I personally think Alcoa should be contributing to the rebuild of the town in a big way and should not take for granted the fact that they have probably ignored it's importance in the past, and contributed to some of it's problems.

Now is a big time for Alcoa to stand up!

On another note, this town first needs to deal with the huge aspestos problem due to it being such an old town. Not only the people who lost their homes to the fire but those that didn't will be condemned anyway from returning because of this problem.

Unfortunately the town was made up of Alcoa workers, but also a lot of old timers who spent all their life there and now will find it hard to be re-located. People also forget that this region is a major beef and milk producing area and not just the town was damaged but many properties that are prime producers.

Last but not least, the Yarloop Workshops were about to be world heritage listed because they were by far and above anything else of it's type anywhere in the world. No! I'm not a Greeny but this town was based around the timber industry from years ago and was a major hub in it's day and that my friends is something that needs to be preserved or remembered as it's part of our history. It's part of how the South West was built and history well before Alcoa.

I know I'm drifting from petermacs origional post but to compare this to another project? We could do this with anything and any project and have long arguments forever.

If it is investment in the future that barnett is working towards, why has he cut so much from public education and other essential services? Remember that the cuts in public education is what the schools get to buy stuff for educational purposes, nothing to do with wages.

 These cuts have been made

Tue, 2016-01-26 12:06

These cuts have been made accross the board in all gov departments as revenue has fallen so sharply. No point whinging about the the major projects as they would have been budgeted for. Or we can all sit back and be a backwater, boring state with nothing to offer tourists who will be and need to be a revenue source.

Timing of project

perfect timing with resources industry in downturn mode. Large investments fill the employment gap this has created. Well done I say as our economy would be up the spout without this investment.

Barnett has been Premier for way to long unfonately no other talent coming through the liberal party to replace him , saying that I am a member of the labor party and our talent is even more thin on the ground , you don't get a good government unless you have a good opposition , that's why Barnett has got his way for so long

Labour had their turn.

Fri, 2016-01-29 06:38

Remember when Alannah Mac Tiernan had the cheque book in her hand spent a lot of revenue on expansion of infrastructure, did some good things for Perth and surrounding areas. What has Barnett done so bad to this state? No government could have forecasted such a big down turn in revenue from our states resources. Got to spend and expand to keep people employed and the economy turning over. When the majority of the voters have had enough of the little emperor he'll get voted out.

Colin spends all our money on long term investments and infrastructure and he is labelled a moron.
