It's not how big your rod is, it's how you use it

A mystery FW angler (only a mystery as my laptop SD card reader has just shat itself) landed a stonking Sambo in about 30 odd meters of water jigging with pe 1.5 and a teeny rod. Said man repeated the act later in the day with a setup that can only be described as a step down from a herring rod with no backbone just to prove his point- all you blokes who are worried about the size of your rod may need to consult this guru in technique... oh and style!

Now on a mission to get the pics & load them up

Update:

Mystery maestro unveiled, none other than Mr Honsu Chin

Absolute hooter of a Sambo that had to be brought in via the transom door because Seaquest & myself couldn't lift it

Also another damn fine angler with a Dhu on plastic: Mr Seaquest

The rod that can only be described as a flick stick for light hezza fishing & this battle had us pissing ourselves as Chinny ran around the boat, all said & done he nailed it & I am still gobsmacked.

Cheers Brendan & Chinny

Has similar story on my boat

Fri, 2011-05-20 13:57

Had similar story on my boat a few weeks ago with professional deckie with PE1.5 and noodle stick landing a sizeable Sambo on my boat......very skilled angler, maybe Brody is correct, making the most of his "small" rod"......he used to sell a lot of Daiwa boat braid as well....................

Fri, 2011-05-20 18:14

Who said you need PE8 to catch sambos. PE f#$k all works just fine.

Can,t believe that rod didn't snap. Very funny.

That first pic doesn't really do that sambo justice, it was a horse.

Was a great day.

Jamie the new rod (JM power spell spin 200) got a good work out on a few sambos. All I need now is a new reel. Maybe Honsu will lend me the stella for a bit longer.

Honsu's Rod

Fri, 2011-05-20 18:16

Was in the store a couple of days ago and he showed me this rod fully loaded. Light as a feather and I thought "would be perfect for catching b&b fish". When he said he was going out in 120m chasing Sambos with it I thought he was joking....just goes to show what graphite can do. Nice report and great pics.

Well deserving of props

Fri, 2011-05-20 19:34

Well deserving of props despite being hilarious to watch these fights, there was some amazing angler skill on display & there was no way I could have done the same. Same drop I got done in with only 3 cranks using pe5 on the Stella (I didn't miss you locking the drag on it Chinny!) I was possibly unlucky but happily got put in the box to sit back & snap some pics whilst observing such light gear pushed to the limit with finesse & sometimes downright abuse. Meanwhile same drop Seaquest was also hooked up putting a serious bend in his new JM powerspell, at the end of the day it was proved no fluke for Chinny as he backed it up landing another solid one on gear considered too heavy for herring!

Another pic to show the length, which would have come to Chinny's chin hehehe but unfortunately I didn't get a pic to show how this baby got back!

Usual day off mate....

Fri, 2011-05-20 21:49

Its also called day trips with 5hrs round trip with near on 12hrs of fishing. Get home and pass out. Get up and fillet the fish and back to work!!

Thanks for the kind words Lamby. You're not so bad, you gotta start from somewhere. Basically tighten all your drags up, Sargent Bakers DONT take drag off 20lb braid!!

Very extreme, Honsu!

Sat, 2011-05-21 09:28

That's whats called "getting the most out of your gear"! How did those fish release? I always thought that big sambos+deepwater+light tackle=poor outcome for the sambo. A mate of mine hooked an estimated 35-38kg one at Jurien last week, on 15lb trolling gear, and the depth was only 15 metres. The fight went for an hour and the fish carked it.

I only ask because if I ever get one that big on light gear I figure you fellas would know all the tricks to revive them.

Fair call John, I think with

Fair call John, I think with the bigger fish & extended fights you need to put more time into the release also. No good putting it down on the release weight, out of sight out of mind. We put the fish on the deck wash straight away whilst everything was organised, call was made to swim her beside the boat which I think is the best idea. All good keeping the fish oxygenated but it needs to get rid of the lactic acid build up, not sure how this method would work if the fish was taken in deep water and suffering barotrauma
