Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD 3.0L Diesel

I have a done up 4.0L Prado Grande, looking for a diesel option and contemplating the above.

I know plenty of people use them for towing, just wondering if anyone knows how reliable they are off road on the tracks or heard any bad reports?

Cheers,
Millsy

Mine goes hard offroad. Sand, Mud,Rocks whatever. ( No heavy crawling )

Mines 2012 CRD, QL, Dual battery, ERPS, Brake controller, HD roof rack with 30'' Led.

Reliability:I havnt had any issues after 20k 80% of my driving is towing the boat and offroad so pretty happy with it. ( Touch Wood) I believe there was a few that were having issues in the sand and would limp into 2WD mode but i beleive thats been fixed now. Mine never had the issue to begin with.

Lots of good accessories nearly about to hit the markey. Like a winch bar, sorkel and a rear bar coming soon.

Mines a 2013 model, only had it a couple of months but couldn't be happier, shits all over the 2011 Navara it replaced.Only hard part is getting the missus out of it as she thinks it's hers now. The CRD definately has plenty of get up and go in it and very comfy as well on the long trips.Doesn't even feel the 23ft glass boat on the back.

Thu, 2013-08-08 05:19

I went the 2013 limited edition 3.0ltr Diesel Trailhawk and what a car. I can not speak highly enough of it. I have the same problem though shonky. My mrs is putting all the km's on it while i am away at work and reluctantly hands the keys over when i am home. Its a serious go anywhere machine but feels like you are driving your couch around its that comfortable.

Heard good things about them

Thu, 2013-08-08 06:49

I have heard good thins about them from a guy who has one, he traded his patrol in for one. They had a crap reputationbut since they

have started to use Fiat Engines they have improve heaps, he reckons the fuel economy just blows the patrol away and thats towing a caravan

There's a black one coming up for sale down Wonnerup way very shortly.
One owner, only been on the beach once and only been swimming once as well. May need a snorkel as owner doesn't like to get feet wet checking depth before crossing rivers

Thu, 2013-08-08 07:58

I had an older one 2006 with the 3 lt, great car but I think mine was a lemon. Had lots of issues with the turbo system, sensors etc, It started causing me grief around 85000 KM the car was out of warrenty and cost me around $11K in repairs The faults were common those motors which were also used in the 300C at the time. Could not fault the car apart from that. Heaps of grunt and heaps of towing power. Also that model is expensive to lift, so if your thinking of putting a lift kit in do your research, along with a lot of things the gearbox needs to be shimmed as well if you want it done properly

Got a 2012 Grand Cherokee

Thu, 2013-08-08 08:14

Got a 2012 Grand Cherokee 3.0L V6 CRD, went the Laredo as was brought purely to tow the boat, put a 2.5" lift under it. Tows my 3t Wellcraft no probs at all, plenty of power for overtaking and as others have said fuel economy is sensational, when not towing average around 10L/100km & that is not babying it either. Even towing the boat get between 15 to 17l/100k. Better fuel economy when towing than I got from my 4.0L Prado when it was empty.

Why the lift

Thu, 2013-11-07 23:48

If it is purely for towing the boat all that is going to do is increase your fuel consumption and hinder your on road handling.

ive got a 2012 limited diesel and ive done 51,000ks in 12 months and other than a split hose havent had an issue , awesome car for power and economy(Ihad an 07 v8 auto landcruiser before the jeep) but with 20' rims and low profile tyres it is not a "hard core" off roader" as is " ive got all the options including the quadralift airbags but you need to change the rims and tyres if you plan on doing serious beach work, all in all though i wouldnt swap it for anything other than the latest model sahara.  cheers

the hose was in stock fisherking, jeep assist was there within 1 hour and i had the car back the next day.although the start button just crapped itself 10 mins ago at work , but for all of you with jeeps, you  just pull the start button out (it pops out with your fimgernails or by levering it out with a key) then you can insert the whole key and you are away.   cheers

Rear Space compared to a Prado??

Thu, 2013-08-08 15:05

Thanks to all for your comments.

I haven't even seen one of these in real life as yet - but will this weekend.

How does the space compare for carting gear around?

Got a 08 Jeep commander CRD

Thu, 2013-08-08 15:42

Got a 08 Jeep commander CRD Limited 3.0L Turbo Diesel.

Plenty of grunt, great fuel economy, more than happy with it.

No major issues except a slight oil leak from the rear main which Jeep picked up on a normal service and replaced under warranty no questions. This was 2 years ago and not missed a beat.

Only downside and i think its the same for the Grand Cherokee is the clearance under the car. On soft beaches bottoming out is an issue, and i have been bogged twice... :( Other beaches are no issue and all off road no dramas. It's towed my 3.5t Fury around for 4 and a half years without any complaints. 100km all the way to Exmouth with plenty of grunt left over.

Thu, 2013-08-08 16:55

I wish I had read this before I got my Nissan , I bought a brand new FJ Toyota last year (the retro look hooked me) but after about 8 months I caned it as it was bloody hungry on fuel , they only come in petrol and left hand visibility is down right dangerous, the rear suicide doors are squeezey when get adults in and out from the back and the luggage area is non existent, the final straw was the rear sensors driving me mad when backing the boat down the ramp traded it for a Nissan it is better than the FJ but might have gone Jeep if I had read this before I traded the tojo

Prices

Fri, 2013-08-09 10:55

Hey guys, I had the previous model with the 5.7 V8, great car but fuel use was scary. I'm looking at the new 2014 model CRD Laredo, but getting stuffed around by the sales guys who won't give me a "real" price. If anyone has recently purchased one I'd be keen to hear what you ended up paying, pm is fine.

I'm also considering a second hand 2011 model with 40k on the clock that looks like good value.

thanks guys

Cheers JoRn, my last model was the Overland, but from what I see the base Laredo has pretty much all the options I like, and I'm guessing it's about $8-10K cheaper than the Limited. I like the leather, but don't think it's worth the extra coin, and I don't see any advantage in the 20" rims/tyres on the Limited. I don't know what other goodies the Limited has over the Laredo?

Hey greasemonkey, I found the salesman at Mandurah (who was named after a power tool)a bit lack lustre.Wound up going through Maddington and was  pretty happy with the deal. Just make sure you get the CRD, you won't be dissapointed.

Love all of the positive feedback on them and thanks to all for your comments.

After sitting my Prado next to one last weekend, I just can't see it doing what I want it to do.

Good 2nd hand 100 series or new 200 Series here I come by the look of it.

Pricing

Mon, 2013-09-16 20:05

Well, two dealers have given me a price of $55K driveaway for the 2014 model (8 speed auto) Laredo CRD with tint & towbar. I was hoping to get a bit more off the price, but looks like this is about what I'll end up paying. Anyone get a better deal lately?

Cheers,

BD.

That price seems pretty good to me ,is that on yard stock or do you have to wait till the next shipment .

I picked up a CRD Laredo with qudra-lift suspension ,off road pack and a towbar last week . If I take into consideration the extras your price is probably slightly better .

Bought one

Wed, 2013-09-18 09:42

Hi Greasemonkey, I signed up one yesterday. Paid $54,750.00 and tried to get them to include side steps, but they wanted $1600 for them and claimed their cost was $1400. I will get a set of genuine mopar ones from the states, same part number for aroun$500 inc shipping. I don't mind them making some money, but that's a ridiculous markup. They claim the car is in stock Perth, they are getting it from another dealer, will wait for their call.

how much did you pay for your package? I woul have loved the quadralift, but would rarely use it. Pm me if you like.

cheers,

BD

Finally arrived

Thu, 2013-11-07 22:00

Well it's finally arrived, I picked up the keys on tuesday and I'm stoked. Massive difference in handling/comfort/noise levels from my 2010 V8 model. The diesel is quiet and grunty, will be interesting to see how it tows as the V8 was effortless, but reckon this will do it even easier. Can't get over the level of comfort in a diesel 4WD.

Now for the accessories, thinking lift kit (cheap as ex USA thanks to the car being engineered for quadralift), side steps (again ex USA), nudge bar (for spotties/aerial), UHF, roof racks & rod holders just for a start. Good job Santa is coming soon!

Great car

Fri, 2013-11-08 08:06

My new Grand Cherokee has nearly 3000 km now and I love it . It tows my baron sportsman like an empty box trailer . Fuel economy is great , averages 8-9L around town and 12-13 L with the boat on the freeway . The new 8 speed box is so smooth you nearly dont notice gear changed . Only downside so far is parking a mile away at the shops so nobody dents it .
