Joining anchor rope to chain
Submitted by Cruise Control on Tue, 2013-12-10 08:32
My anchor rope is getting on and needs replacement. Hasn't failed yet but I think I'll get in first !
Problem is my rope is spliced straight onto chain that feeds through the gypsy on the anchor winch. I can splice a rope but I cant get it as tight as it needs to be to feed through the winch. Is there another way to join the two for example will a shackle feed through the gypsy without jamming ?
cheers

best get better at splicing,
best get better at splicing, i do a lot of chain loading at work and we never put shackles through the gypsy other than kenter links which are designed to go through, dont know if you can get small joining links or not, the chain might not get caught the first or second time but it might when you really need it to come up
not sure why yu would need to get it really tight but you should be able to make it as tight or as loose as you want, try binding the eye down with some fencing wire before you start splicing that will hold it down a bit tighter

Agree ... splice is the only
Agree ... splice is the only method that should be used for an anchor winch. Directly from rope to chain. Definitely not shackles. Maybe practice a little ... and you tube has some good instructional video's. Good luck!

Cheers guys, I had a sneaking suspicion that would be the only connection that was suitable with a winch. More practice needed !
