Joining braid of different strengths?

I've got about 100m of pe8 left and about the same of pe6 on some spools out the back, which I could just join onto some of my other reels but they are pretty full at the moment.  I've got a new reel to trial and figure I might try and join these two braids to use them rather than let them sit in my shed and deteriorate.  I guess my question is, should I go the mono backing, the 6 and then the 8, or the 8 and then the 6, does it make any difference in feeling bites or any other issues?  I'm thinking I go the mono, 6, then 8 and just see how it goes.  I could just fork out for some new braid but would prefer to try and use some of this leftover stuff to get value for money.

i would have said mono, cats paw, 8 then cats paw 6 but probably does not make a lot of difference, if they snap 6 8 probably would not have save you unless it is for popping

My guess

My thoughts (never done it) would be that you would be better off having it mono,6,8 simply because then the majority of the time your fishing your heavier line and if it ever hits anything under a little tension you have that tiny bit of extra security running 8 over 6. However (sure it is in the forefront of your mind already) I would only ever be running drag suitable for the weakest link in the chain (probably the knot in the PE6). You wouldnt really want to be running your drag set up for PE8 then have the knot going through eyes and wondering if your PE6 was going to hold...

that was my thoughts, and

that was my thoughts, and lighter line is easier to fish as far as feel and less weight needed

Just for simple fishing

Not sportsfishing, I would go mono, 6 and 8. Once the initial punch of a fish is over you I think even if it got to the 6 you almost have it beat in most scenarios, so the chance of a bust off is less the longer the fight, unless you get reefed, or the knots are weak, or its a razor gang member.

Not trying to poach the threat, but since I fish for fun and feed not for PBs etc, I still use a back to back ten wrap Uni with Histacryl (A Tissue glue used to stitch kids cuts) doB. Never had this fail yet, and I am just to lazy to tie Bimini's in "standard" rigs most off the time.

Any opinions on this.

I dont bother with biminis

Tue, 2011-07-05 13:46

I dont bother with biminis for bottom fishing, maybe if I am bored at night on a fishing trip i might redo them but out on the boat waste of time imho. I just do a slim beauty for braid - mono then uni for everything else, I am sure there are better but this works for me.

Yes I am totally with you

I can cope with what I might perceive as a relative weakness if I am not chasing records. If sports fishing or using the wand with flies I always go for the best, but as you said on a boat, waste of space. I can tie a Uni blind (in all forms -at night, getting old with need of glasses and to much grog) but couldnt do that with a bimini or more techno knots.

what knot?

Tue, 2011-07-05 15:36

on that subject:

whats the best knot to join braid to braid? and how does affect it strength wise?

had a deep water bust off the other week and seems a shame to waste all thats left (it will be joined to the exact same type of braid that was left over from new), and dont really want to go the mono backing to lose the sensitivity.

cheers

Bimini

Tue, 2011-07-05 21:02

Definatly a back to back bimini with cats paw , I have on a few occasions in the heat of a good bite { after a bust off or big tangle } done a back to back double uni and both times it has resulted in tears after the uni failed, so now i switch rods and re-tie with a bimini when we move spots or a quiet time comes along ...

Then catspaw it. Personally I'd jjust use a double bimini!

Well, if you expose the 6, and you have your drag set to suit 8, bad things would happen, especially as the drag would be going up a bit as you're down 100m on your spool.

Go 6 on top, 8 in the middle, ten mono to back it off.

What rod have you got it on

Wed, 2011-07-06 05:19

What rod have you got it on adam? Not much point putting 8 on top if its a pe5 rod?? Put the 6 or 8 on top depending on the rod.

Not that much difference between pe6 or 8 when it comes to a bit of drag. just have to be careful when it comes through. Woulda thought in Exmouth if you lose 100m of pe8 its not going to be stopped due to sharks or reef.
