Kalbarri Macks and Tuna
Hey guys, just got back from 3 days in Kalbarri.
Doing the trip up fellow member Dane (Daneox) we'd planned to mainly fish landbased but after getting a decky offer to good to refuse
we spent 2 days fishing on local Kalbarri member Kye's (Kye86) boat.
We had a ball chasing around schools of small Tuna (longtail, Striped, Yellowfin) and trolling around looking for Spanish Macks. We scored 18 Spaniards over the 2 days. Size was in the 6-12kg mark.
Thanks alot to Kye for getting us out on the water.
Hope you enjoy these pics
Cheers.
Stripies were great fun on 3kg.
Longtail, I think...
Skipper Kye with a nice Spaniard.
Dane with another...
Mackies everywhere....
This being the best mackie, est. around 12kg
they just kept on coming on Day 2...
Dane with another mack.
Back to the ramp and off for a few well erned brews.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Yeah mate,
we tried out a little deeper but we found them in close to Wagoe and the cliffs in around 15-20m.

well done fellas. Did the run
well done fellas.
Did the run from Port gregory to Kalbarri on the water a couple weeks ago (launched my boat at port gregory, but got badly bogged!! so drove it to kalbarri to retrieve after a week of fishing)
Great drive on the water, and we must have seen 30 schools of tuna along the way!! plenty out there

Nice Matt well worth the drive by the looks. Looks like you scored some good weather as well. Those little tuna are great fun on the light stuff.
Think I'll give fishing a miss over easter can't be trucked with all the crowds. Going to spend the weekend in the garden and drinking heaps of brews. Will be back out again once everyone goes.
Might go for a squid in my mates dingy but that will be all.

Totally agree with your thoughts on this weekend, good time for drinking, shit time to be at the boat ramp.
Certainly no shortage of squid in the bay

It's pretty good
it's concrete based though there can be a bit of soft sand near the water line at times, it is a river I guess so it changes alot. Not the deepest ramp of all time but you could get most trailer craft in and out with no drama's at all with a 4x4. That jetty is a cracker with rubber buffers along 90% of it's length. Impressed

Nice work
Great trip by the looks. That Kalbarri jetty looks a whole better than the last time I was there. Is it new?
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

hey Soupy I think certainly newish
I cant speak for when, but 4yrs ago there was nothing, just drop into the water in the river, hold on to a rope, wade to the boat and off you go. That looks as good as the jetty at the club in Dampier. Floating jetties rule IMO. My father has just left Kalbarri after a few yrs there. I only recall the jetty in the last yr odd.
Others will provide the correct answer I am sure.

Sounds like a great trip. And I bet you had just expected to stand around on shore all day :p. Good to hear you got some on the light tackle too. I had a 6kg stripey on my tiny little 2000 outfit with 8lb and that thing did a near 200m run :o. Takes a while to land but they fight the whole way through and when you release them they still zoom off.
So wheres the YTF's?
And most of all: Wheres the baldie shot?! :p

HAHA,
if i got a Baldy on a trolled minnow or a twisty you all woulda know about it
The tuna thing was interesting, we caught a few small tuna @2-3kgs which we had trouble identifying. Obviously the stripies were easy. But the other were hard. At first they looked like Yellowfin or Bigeye but not quite right so we just assumed they were just Longtails. At that size there tails wern't elongated and the colour seemed wrong. I dunno maybe they were all just Longtails?
Either way there all still swimming and getting bigger for next time
