Kalbarri at this time of year?
Submitted by snapper_seeker on Thu, 2013-04-11 20:35
Hi guys, heading up to Kalbarri for the holidays and I was wondering what there is to catch at this time of year. We will be taking the boat up so where are some good areas to troll/bottom bounce ect. Also are there any mullys/tailor around land based and what's there to catch from the jetty. As a side note, is ballooning for sharks/mackeral at this time of year any good? Cheers, Snapper_seeker

I went up last week. Went
I went up last week. Went out on the local charter Reefwalker (worth going if you don't end up taking the boat up) and got a good back of snapper, redthroat, baldies, cod etc. Also a couple of school mackeral showed up but only one was landed (by me on a float bait
). I obviously wasn't driving but we about 9 nm direct west from the river mouth and in 50metres of water from what I could tell. Apperently the mackies have been off the bite due to the quality of the water (too cloudy).
We got some bream and stuff in the river. I found waiting for night time better to avoid the blowies. Also some herring, tailor and dart from the cliffs.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

hey mate fished there on way
hey mate fished there on way back from steep. spent the night at lucky bay and only got a small mully. other than that went to blue holes which looked promising but swell was average so couldnt get the popper out far but have a crack there with a lure. Red bluff got another mully about 60cm and a large dart and tiny tailor, thought the tailor would be a shoe in, was not to be...
best of luck

Plenty of snapper of the sand patch in 28/30m and a few macks showing up again with water clearing.

So many options at kalbarri,
So many options at kalbarri, we did damn well this time last year on bream, mangrove jacks, and a host of other species further up the river on bait and lures,
including a few giant herring. the cliffs usually have something to offer there, but im no expert. We never managed a tailor from the river mouth but a few mulies retreived without tails was evidence that they were there, just be persistant. (I was anchored in a kayak at the edge of the mouth casting into frothing water).
