Kalbarri today

Went out at gentlemans hours, easterly was fresher than forecast, anchoring was the only option. Didn't go very far north, initially. Busted up on 40lb leader and bait first drop, then nothing. Faffed around slowly working my way north for nothing, bait and jigs, stuff it, head up to Baldface. Immediate action, first a sambo before the anchor rope was straight, then a nice 70 cm trout, then another sambo. Went quiet and wind dropped, pulled the pick and started to prospect, then the southerly came in with a bang, certainly not forecast. Headed straight for home and really bashed the last four miles or so.

samberjack?

Fri, 2015-08-14 08:16

Yes, I thought so too, but after a lot of arguments over the years, I call 'em all sambos. The other one I caught was an amberjack, too.

Nice fish, well done - whats

Fri, 2015-08-14 13:10

Nice fish, well done - whats the buzz with the Amberjacks anyway - I caught one of these on a charter, googled it and it is considered average eating, put it in the cooler and the skipper tossed it back in the water and said its a shit fish?

Is it just that there are better fish out there to eat, or do they eat into the boat limit, or are they just poor eating? They look like a firm white fleshed fish like a tailor that would go down fine in a smoker, or bled and filleted on capture, and on the BBQ?

I've eaten smallish sambos that size, fine on the barbie

heard somewhere amberjacks were better, or is that just opinion? I've always released them in later years, but there are worse eating fish in the sea. We're just spoilt...

Eating quality

Sat, 2015-08-15 16:47

The Samson we caught at Albany of the rocks was great to eat.I have been reliably informed by a marine biologist that they can be infected by a microscopic parasite that makes them mushy when cooked. My brother caught a large on at the Abrolhos that went mushy ,hope that helps

Back out again today

Sat, 2015-08-15 18:48

Nice little 60cm Rankins first up, oh, nice I thought, yummy. In the slurry. later, *thinks* Do Rankins count in the same class as jewies. Phone a friend, checks the book, yes they are. So, of course, I had to release two 62cm jewies during the course of the day, as well as a nice bluebone Couldn't catch a pinkie to save myself.

 Think you might have it

Sat, 2015-08-15 22:09

Think you might have it wrong there mate. I thought it was 1 dhuie per person but 2 demersals in  total. So could of had the rankin and the dhuie, or the 1 dhuie and whatever other Demersal fish that you like. That's how I understand it anyway.

Yes I did get it wrong.

What was i thinking? My mind, up here is generally locked on that 1 jewie 1 snapper double.   I need to carry that guide when we are mixing mulloway/jewies/coral trout/pinkies/rankins/baldies all on the same day. And having a troll for mackerel.

Pinkies inside?

Sun, 2015-08-16 09:09

get ya tub in the super shallows round the old shack ralph! Sum big stinkies hangn round the sand gutters there. Luv those shallow spots!   Tried in the shallows from north end of baldie to past the 3rd fence, nothing, then a boltcutter, so I took off outside a bit. Water looked beautiful, clear and warm, some swell keeping things stirred up on the bottom. Should've been good.
