Karratha today-updated with pics

I hope some of you Karratha boys are out enjoying this weather!

Adam is likely enjoying his other passion today-"hazard card shuffle"

Edit-as we sometimes see threads started by younger blokes looking for their first job etc maybe an idea to get some peoples posting "a day in the life of..." type threads in the General Discussion Area?

First some cargo for the rig

Then out to the tanker to drop the pilot, surveyor and some equipment

then back to the Calm Buoy (where the oil is pumped to) and pick up the hawser for the tanker. Export hose is floating to the left

Tanker approaches from several miles away, you can see why they need a little clearance and small boats cutting across the bow can cause some problems

as he comes to a stop the pick up line with the hawser is passed up and they are secured. This needs to happen quickly especially if there is breeze or tide, the bow can fall away quickly.

As soon as this is done we grab the export hose and pull it out of the way until they are secure

Once they are secure the hose is pulled into position and cranes up to the tanker for connection

Once thats done we go to the stern and connect the tow which serves to keep the tanker from drifting onto the bouy/hose etc on tide changes etc.

Then start pulling! Mostly only for 24hrs but has been up to 5 or 6 days

Once the transfer is complete, its all in reverse and homeward bound!

Well, at least insofar as Dampier is home!

Hope someone may find it interesting or at least informative regarding marine activity in the area.

credit where its due

Mon, 2014-02-03 19:04

I was onboard a mermaid's barge about 10 years ago to observe them deploy a buoy for rio tinto ( I worked for rio in the marine department) It was amazing watching the deckys slowly cutting away the ropes holding the anchor and it slowly slip over the stern of the barge and then speed up dragging the chain flacked out on the deck until it was like a runaway locomotive , then dragged the bouy in . It was done very professionally and safely (could have gone badly wrong) I will never forget the sound of that chain as it ran of the deck . As far as I know they didn't have a JHA, SWP , take 5 ,PTW, tri start or CBP , they just all knew their jobs and what to do , when I was asked by the east intercourse manager how it went I just said " it went well"

Cossack Pioneer

Sun, 2014-02-02 21:14

Think its name was Cossack Pioneer, a well head production ship, it was in Hedland harbour for a refit when we were broken down doing our own refit.
The ship was too long for the berth and there had to be two tugs pushing it against the dock at any given time for the three whole 3 weeks. The third tug would take over from one so they could go and refuel, take a break etc then 24 hour later it would relieve the other tug and so on until the refit was complete.

Pretty boring stuff just looking at a painted square on the side of the ship but I reckon the money would have been worth it

Great to see the extra pics Rob, shows those who have no idea exactly what goes on out there.

The Cossack Pioneer is long

Mon, 2014-02-03 15:02

The Cossack Pioneer is long gone now, Sold off to Chevron for a stupid price then they realised what a rust bucket it was and sold it for half what they paid for it. She's been replaced by the much nicer Okha FPSO. I was on that shutdown at Port Hedland doing communications upgrades, we where the first onboard to get a Internet connection and get the boys TV working for thier rooms, You got a feel for just how large she was when berthed there at wharf 2 i think i was, the manganese terminal anyway but geez did they spend some cash on that little trip! the lunches at the Pier where good, the Skimpy's not so much....

I'd love to see how you get on in rough weather Rob. Was on the Ocean America watching the crane load the tender with riser sections once, I reckon easy 3-4m swell with seas, man he was good.

Mon, 2014-02-03 00:43

You're a better man than me!

Watching the little Mermaid vessels beam on and rolling whilst doing an off take or better still, stern to getting the deck awash doesn't seem too much fun. At least on the bigger anchor handling vessels our feet stay drier most of the time
