Lancelin Report
Submitted by Codhead on Sun, 2013-01-27 13:17
Myself and a mate spent a couple of hours in the tinny out from Lancelin to avoid the chaos at Two Rocks. We braved fairly average conditions early on and got out to some intersting ground in around 30 meters close to some cray pots. Plenty of bites including our bag limit of baldies and dhufish and a sambo and few black bottomed cod which were released. We saw a couple of schools of small yellowfin tuna hitting the surface but didnt hook up trolling skirts on the way in.

Nicely done.
Nicely done.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

nice fish mate
I just bought a 4.2m tinny and was looking at heading up there next week for a fish, how far out do you need to go to hit 30m depth?

Curious!
Nice catch's mate! Can I ask what area you got over the reef to get out the back to 30m?

Launch and distance.
I usually launch immediately south of the jetty. The sand is hard so no problem. From there you can head straight out through a gap in the reef around 50m wide, you just have to be careful to miss several shallow patches of reef before you get there.
Once outside, you will get to the 30m mark at around 6-7ks out and you should start to pick up cray pots. If you sound around you will find some hard ground and just do long drifts.
I generally don't go any further out this time of year in the tinny.

Passages
There are 3 passages through the reef, the South passage, closes out in a 2 metre plus swell, Hole in the wall, just south of Lancelin island, usually safe except in up to 3 metre swell and north of the island which closes out in real big swell.
