Land Based Pink Snapper

Ryan Thipthorp and staff member Dave went to North Mole late last night/this morning targeting land base pink snapper. The boys did well with Ryan getting a pinky on the first cast, Dave got one 30 minutes later and the boys hung around for another fish which Ryan landed. Congrats fellas, Ryan left his DSLR camera at home so shitty iphone pics were supplied.

Gotta love the storms for land base fishing!!

Ryan was using shop scaly mackerel and all pinks had the bait & hooks well and truly in their mouth so good hookups.

I run 50lb braid, 4-5 m of 100lb wind-on leader down to my rig!

My snapper/mulloway rig is a threeway crane swivel, snelled 7/0 circle hooks and a #5 or #6 star sinker!

Bait was whole scaly mackerel!

Good luck

I was using 50lb braid to 89lb leader then a runnin sinker rig with a size 6 star and either snelled 6/0 circles or a single 8/0 circle. What length do you run to the snell and the sinker?

You can use a running sinker/rig setup and I have in the past but I prefer the patternoster rig!

It gets your bait slightly elevated so more exposure!

I prefer two hooks snelled over a single!

What length do you run to the snell and the sinker?

Length from my threeway crane to sinker is approximately 950mm!

Length from my threeway crane to snelled hooks is approximately 650mm!

Without drag is probably better. It allows the fish to snap the line if it really wants to get away.

Seriously though, I think 25lb should be ok if you play the fish well

lachieH, 25lb mono is fine but when running braid I prefer to go heavier around the sharp rocks!

As for drag pressure ....... a medium set drag is the way to go so your reel/drag sets the hook as the fish runs .... too loose and they can pick & spit!

Snaps

Nice work lads. Pinkys from the stones in the middle of the night, you're keener than me. I'll stick to diving and take my chances with the sharks. ;)

hey ryan, cracking fish well

Mon, 2014-05-12 13:20

hey ryan, cracking fish well done!

with your rock fishing rig which do you have longer from the 3-way, the sinker line or the line with the hooks?

i was thinking the sinker line longer to keep the bait off the bottom? a mate of mine thinks the hook line should be longer?

what are your thoughts?

cheers.

Thanks mate, to answer your question I use;

Length from my threeway crane to sinker is approximately 950mm!

Length from my threeway crane to snelled hooks is approximately 650mm!

Yes I prefer to keep the bait elevated so shorter to the hooks. I've seen guys use longer hook lengths ie past the sinker but it can increase the chance for tangles so not for me!
