Tailor Marc can probably point you in the right direction for landbased fishing at Shark Bay.
Whether you want to go to Carnarvon or not may depend on what is happening with the jetty there. I haven't heard much since it was badly affected by a fire awhile ago.

When you say Shark Bay, you mean steep point etc?  or Denham?

Not sure if the 1 mile jetty has been re-opened in Canarvon (unlikely) but you can still fish around there in a tinny and get mulla's etc.

Quobba

Wed, 2008-09-10 12:59

You can't not think about Quobba for landbased awesome fishing !!!!!

Good camping grounds and most places accessable by car!!!

2 mile reef, Whistlers, Garths and Camp rock (good cliff gaff required)!!!

Always someone there at the beach with 4x4 who would drop your tinny in for ya!!!

Better stop or I'll be packing up my gear and going !!!!!

Quobba

Wed, 2008-09-10 13:39

Jas, Quobba station is approx 80 click NW of Carnarvon. Here's some info on it:

http://www.quobba.com.au/default.htm

Just click on Quobba station. I haven't been up there for years, but when we did go, as Rod says, the LB fishing was awesome! Well worth a visit!

It's awesome

Must be nearly 30 years since I went up there. In those days, you stayed in the shearers quarters - basic accomodation, but adequate for a few young crusty fishos :)

I remember us 3 boys getting stuck into some macs from high rock - awesome fun!

Then there was garths - great fishing platform.

Like I said great LB action.

Looking at that website QS has come a long way facilities wise.

Went we (us 3 boys) went up last time, we spent a week up there and had it to ourselves. Not sure if you could do that nowadays.

leave the tinny and hit quobba by far the best land based game in the country and can catch all the same species as if you were in the boat.

Quobba

Wed, 2008-09-10 14:59

The southerlies [wind ] have started up here, but you can always find somewhere to fish on shore in the Quobba area,High rock ,Garth's or even Red Bluff offer some pretection as long as the swell is down.
The jetty is still to have work started on it to rebuild after the fire. With a dinghy a few blokes have used them to gain access to the unaccessable outer end to get amongst the mulloway of late. There is a ladder where the shed is on the north side.Been a few reasonable tailor caught from the town beach but haven't heard of anything else of late

Watch your ass

on High Rock - i was at Quobba years ago and we fished HR for 3-4 days no probs. Day 5 a monster swell hit from nowhere - lost cameras, $$$ of tackle but luckily all 4 of us held on to either rock or new safety cables a Carnarvon angling club had installed the week before. To make matters worse, Mike Ronnefeldt saw it happen( didn't yell out either) and wrote us up as a bunch of tossers in the West. Absolutely no chance as it happens - the wave looked just like all the others but just kept rising. But all in all, Quobba beats Denham and Carnarvon for me - and we pigged out on Jumbos the mate caught on the reefs close inshore almost opposite the station.

Are they going to rebuild the whole jetty? Any idea when it might be finished?

Jetty update

Fri, 2008-09-12 16:48

The first loads of timber for the repairs have arrived, work has started as far as I know on the pontoon needed for the job.
They are going to rebuild the burnt section [I think its 17 bays/piers wide] and do other maintenance thats to be done. Will try to find out when its due to be finished but think its going to be quite some time.
The jetty is still open to the burnt section with the train running most days

Great News!

Fri, 2008-09-12 17:05

That's great news! Though it might be a long time, it appears clear as to intent and it's not going to rott and be demolished - that would have been a crying shame!

I fished off it 3 times in my life and loved each occassion - not quobba etc, but still great fun.

Jetty catches

Fri, 2008-09-12 17:35

Have seen some magic fish come off the jetty--mulloway to 30kg,though most come in the 10-12kg range.Heaps of sharks up to 12-14 feet, mainly tigers.Cobia, spaniards, shark mackeral, heaps of tuna plus all the smaller fish.
A mate demolished an ABU 10.000 18 months back on what we thought was a big cod,was on for over an hour ,no more than walking pace at its fastest run, took 200yds in first walk-not run then slowly worked its way round the end untill spool collapsed blowing the end plates nearly off,and ping its all over

JETTY

Sat, 2008-09-13 14:09

Still a few good dart, yellow fin bream and tailor being caught in the shallows around the start of the jetty, more on the prawning jetty though its a bit of a hassle getting on toit now they have pulled a couple of sections out preventing people getting out to it.I think its due to the insurance risk if someone got hurt due to the lack of maintenance done on it over the years.
