landbased lure reel

I wondered if i could get some advice on what 4000 sized reel to get for chucking lures landbased. I'll mainly be using slices and plugs with the ocasisonal popper and plastic. was looking at the smallest sized spinfisher v but probably too heavy. also curoius about the okuma salina, heard some good things about them. looking around the $200 range but that budget always seems to stretch when it comes to new gear, and if I know im getting something that will last I  dont mind upping the  budget a bit.

Depends a bit on what you're

Depends a bit on what you're chasing but as a general purpose reel for Tailor, Salmon, small Tuna, up North flicking from shore, etc I'd also recommend a Stradic 5000 (Shimano smaller than Daiwa and other brands).

I've actually got a Sustain 5000 but from all accounts the Stradic is pretty much the same reel and $100 cheaper (bit over $200 for Stradic). Very light, 10kg drag, 5.8 ratio- so fast enough (Sustain a bit faster at 6.2). Might struggle a bit in capacity if you hook a Mackie from shore but would be an interesting tussle (hope to try this when I move back to Kalbarri at the end of the year).

I've looked into this a bit and if you search this site you'll find plenty of posts along a similar vein. For my intended purposes I'm happy with the Sustain and I'd probably be just as happy with the Stradic. Next reel I'm planing on buying and trying will be the Daiwa Sol II 4000.

There are plenty of other good reels but they don't necessarily have the speed of the reels I've mentioned and I prefer a high ratio for working metals if you're looking for one for lures.

Hope this helps,

Mathew

Stradic 5000 is a great reel. Holds 300m of 20lb braid, good drag, light weight and the 5000 has the larger power knob handle.

Love mine and would buy another

+1 Use a stradic 5000 for exactly the same thing chasing tailor from the shoreline. Beautiful light reel ands holds plenty of line. Get the 5000 rather than the 4000 for the deeper spool on the same size reel.

 get the stradic, you won't

get the stradic, you won't be disappointed. I have a sol 2 3000 which is nice but dearer than the stradic and to be honest doesn't perform any better than a stradic

I have a Sol TD 4000 and absolutely love it. Also have a Rarenium 2500 and it's heaps of fun for flicking lures around.

Mates with Stradic's swear by them

+1 for Stradic. Don't own one

Tue, 2013-11-26 13:19

+1 for Stradic. Don't own one but just clean mate's 5000 - he never rinsed it after use and have been dunked in sand seawater etc...

I was surprise how smooth the reel still runs after all these abuse.

On a different note, the new Biomaster SW 5000-HG will fit the purpose nicely. High gear for cranking lures across the surface quickly especially working topwater plugs like richter, GT-Ice Cream etc.

Another Stradic vote

For the value, even though I have Sustains. I find the extra coin probably worth it for the extra distance I get with the sustain ( and weight)  compared to the other halfs Stradic's (she doesnt like black reels!!!) but cant fault them as a reel. And that is even compared to my older more pricey shimano Saragosa's and I forgotten the name off the just below Stella reels that has been deleted recently.

Daiwa Freams 4000 works for

Sun, 2013-12-01 17:48

Daiwa Freams 4000 works for me, not as drag power as a stradic 5000(freams only has 8kg) but has a bigger line capacity and isn't much heavier
