Landcruiser diesel servicing - injectors? NOR
Submitted by Joodles on Mon, 2011-05-16 15:41
G'day, just wondering if anyone can recommend a service centre that specialises in diesel servicing and tuning? I have a Landcruiser100 that has some really poor fuel economy, I mean really poor and I'm told that the injectors should be done at 150k? My regular mechanic is good but he doesn't do alot of diesels so maybe you can recommend someone North of river, hopefully who has a dyno also?
Thanks

I'm not in a position to answer your question
Don't get me wrong - I'm not promoting this idea. I have a 100 series TD. Sometime ago, I was experiencing a backward movement with my fuel economy and some (minor) general rough starting. It was suggested to me that i get the injectors serviced, which to me was a logical thought. Now at about the same time, a sometimes not so trustworthy friend of mine borrowed my vehicle and god bless him, he decided that he would fill my main tank for me. The problem was, that put about 10 litres of unleaded fuel into my tank before he realised what he was doing. Subsequent to that, he topped up the tank with about 70 litres diesel. I spoke with a diesel mechanic a short while later and he suggested that it would not be a problem, given the amount of unleaded that was put in the tank.
Long story short, that same day my car ran much better and my fuel economy had improved come the end of the main tank. In fact it had probably never run as a good as it did following that, even to this day. Apparently in colder climates it's not that uncommon to do it or used to be the case (apparently). Good at cleaning the diesel gum of the injectors apparently.

perth injector service
I had a mobile guy do my injectors on the patrol called perth injector service. Made a huge difference as my car had done about 280,000ks on the originals. cost about $500 for the injecors and labour, considering i couldnt get the injectors any cheaper than about $400 i thought that was a good deal. If you want to get your fuel pump adjusted I dont think he can do it but maybe all you need is the injector replacement.
I noticed my car runs better and gets alot beeter economy on BP fuel, also change your fuel filter once you get the injectors done there is alot of crapola in cheap diesel give those cheap servo's a wide berth

Hmmm...interesting! I think I might seek some qualified advice before mixing some unleaded in but the proof was obviously in the pudding!
Na it has a tiny puff of dark smoke when first started in the morning, usually if the missus forgets to give it a bit of preheat.

No Smoke is Good news
But smoke will happen if you lose boost or you are shedding unburnt fuel. I had to laugh at the comment re: unleaded mix in the tank above. Lordy lordy.. would the mechanics have a field day!!! If my brother heard that he would just throw his hands in the air and walk away laughing LOL. Each to their own I guess.
Roddo seems to have the right idea. Take it to a diesel specialist and not a franchise of so called service specialists who know everything about anything and can't fix a thing if it goes beyond an oil change and a new sticker on the window.
In my experience for what it's worth high fuel consumption can often be matched with decreased performance (and of course, smoke). I had a similar problem recently with my Landy and primarily it came back to sorting the hoses to the turbo and intercoller out and cleaning the MAF. Nothing at all to do with the injectors or the fuel pump. Having said that of course your problem could well be different.

proper service
Joodles , diesel engine dont come cheap , i would be looking for a dedicated diesel tech that may have a dyno machine for a 4 wd so they can carry out a full diagnostic of the engine , you didnt mention whether it was turbo or not , air and fuel are you main concern , they have to be clean and it may be several things that need servicing, i would be looking at the fuel pump and what type of air filter you have, or snorkle and is it blocked. but there are sensors as well that will need to be checked, United fuel injection services would be my preference as well , good luck

A1
I use A1 in Redcliff. Great to deal with, and if its turbo theres a turbo place in the same complex.

I think you blokes are right,
I think you blokes are right, I'll book it in at United's and see what they come up with. It's not turbo'd, straight 4.2 slugger. I did fit a K&N air filter and Safari snorkel so I think the air flow should be adequate. Wait and see what the experts say.
Cheers fella.
