Last couple of Trips SE QLD..Reds, Trout and much more
Submitted by Greg Lamprecht on Wed, 2011-06-01 10:33
Hi everyone,
Last couple of trips over here has been pretty good although the fish haven't come easy and I have found myself driving big distances (up to 460km a trip) trying to locate qaulity fish. Fished areas out from the town of 1770 and Fraser Island.
Most fish have come from isolated rocks in 55 to 80mtrs of water including the qaulity Trout.
We were using mostly paternoster rigs (80lb) and mullet/Hussar fillets for bait.
Enjoy the pics

Hi Paully, over in New
Hi Paully, over in New Caledonia we call the Blue Maori Cod... didn't even know they were caught in Australian waters. Not sure what they're called here. Look very similar to Rankins.

Hey mate
Yeh - the first thing i thought of was rankin, knowing that it wasn't one of course. Beautiful looking fish that's for sure. Im getting jealous sitting here looking at pics like that - not to mention all the ones you post
Those CT's are horses and that Pearly must about be full size, from what Ivé been led to believe.

Hey Paully thanks for the comments.
That fish you referred to is a Blue Moari Cod as Jay suggested. Probally one of the better eating cod over here and found on newly found ground more so from Fraser Island northwards. We get the coronation Trout in simliar areas to the Blue Moari Cod. Beautiful fish they are. Yes it's a good sized Pearlie for over here and we get them to about 6kg. Anything over 4kg for Pearlie is cracker for over here.
Cheers

Hi Jay we really don't use
Hi Jay we really don't use jigs much for our Red fishing over here. Other species like kingies, ambos and sambos we do.
Red Emporer are a fairly lazy feeder that feed/graze hard against the bottom. They won't raise in the water column to feed but I'm sure if a jig was worked slowly close to the bottom they wouldn't mind hitting one. I have plans on targeting them with this method soon actually. Worked with plastics and best i have scored was a 13.5kg one.

Hooters
Hooter reds there Greg, here we are thinking we have it pretty good in the west but some of those just blow your mind. You should submit one of those pics (the best in your opinion) to the board as an individual image and then I can enter it in June's Photo of the Month comp, good chance it would win you a pair of sunnies.
Cheers,
Adam

Thanks for the comments Adam.
Thanks for the comments Adam. I have already won a pair of sunnies from last SEPT photo comp with a big Long Nose Emperor. So I will leave the comp to others but thanks for suggesting it.

Greg

Some serious quality there guys
Would love to get a red like some of those bigger ones!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Awesome Pics
Looks as though some of the trout are metre-plus. Great effort, would have compensated for the large fuel bill to get there and back.
Fishing isn't a sport.....it's an institution.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Blazing photos
And a top Quality bloke to leave the sunnies to someone else. What can you do with more than one pair. Couple of those trout are close to Aus record I think.

Some awesome captures mate!
Some awesome captures mate! Really is a great part of the world 1770. Witnessed some of the most insane LBG fishing from the rocks in 1770 for 20kg+ Tuna and spaniads... definitely need to get back there at some point.

Great photos mate, you just took me away from the stress of work for a moment or too. Cheers.
We've tried some extensive jigging for reds, and found that octo jigs were the only ones we had any luck with, and they worked quite well. Might be worth a try if you were looking into jigging for them.
Cheers
