what time of the year do the pinkies start coming in close to the rocks at the moles or beaches in perth? i have been told that winter time when the swell is up is a good time to get them.

During and straight after
During and straight after the storms. I was told that they went mad yesterday in the horrible weather and had quietened off by today, although I still managed a 60cm model from the rocks early this morning. Also saw a monster sambo landed as well.

I used to catch them off the end of south mole when the northwest winds started. More stormy the better. Use half a herring for bait.
cheers

They were around north mole
They were around north mole last night. I saw 5 landed & got my two as well (54 & 61cm), not huge but still a good feed. Anytime through the cooler months when the swell is up is worth a try but when there's a good N'wester blowing is always best. Keep an eye on the weather & check the news section of the Fremantle Ports website just before you go to make sure the mole is open. If it all comes together & you decide to go down there go early to make sure you get a spot as it gets busy early. The end of the mole was totally packed by 5pm yesterday & there were plenty of late comers down along the road coming in that couldn't get a spot at the end.

A long 60lb leader, long gaff and a climb down the rocks. Swell was pretty low when I got mine today so it was pretty easy.

I just use a standard
I just use a standard paternoster rig when I'm on my own, I save the long leader for when I've got a gaff man. I have a 4m gaff & so long as I time the waves right it's pretty easy to get the fish up on my own. I was just using fresh caught scalies last night.

i was there (north mole) yesterday morning and got a few squid casting towards the rotto ferry terminal and there were a few waves coming over to that area. went down this morning and it was like glass. i put a boney hering fillet out for a while and got nothing, same as the squid.
