platipus super 100 advice

has anyone used the platipus super 100 mono line before? realy thin for its weight. just wondering if its thin diameter means its strength is questionable. ill be spooling it on an old penn 850 as the old line has streached and changed colour from clear to light gray.

super 100

I've only used the 12lb super 100 line.  It is thin, and probably because of the small diameter it seems to cast quite well.  The line feels OK too.  At first I really liked it.  However, it also seems to weather quickly. It goes from being clear-ish to more opaque white and becomes brittle.  If you strip off line constantly and expose new line, it's ok, but you will rapdily deplete the line on the spool.  If you don't or you forget, you'll end up losing lures and fish.  Although I like the thin diameter for the strength, I wouldn't buy it again.

I've used it before & wasn't

I've used it before & wasn't a fan, mostly becuase it doesn't offer much abrasion resistance. Apart from that it was ok but I didn't put up with it for long enough to find out if degradation was an issue. Better off sticking with platinum or maxima ultra-green imo.

Its strength is as it states

Its strength is as it states on the label and is the perfect line if you want casting distance and or spool capacity. Being thin for the diameter is going to mean that it will not handle abrasion compared to thicker lines (only common sense really) however as far as thin mono goes it is pretty tuff. It is great line when used for what it is designed for. Like all lines it will degrade with use, however this will also depend on the quality of guides you have on your rod and the conditions you fish it in. Dirty water will generally result in faster wear. As with any line once it has last its sheen remove a few metres until the line is shiny again and go from there.

Mono is cheap, so do not try and make it last forever and you will get the most out of it.

From website;

  • Super-100™ has the thinnest diameter
  • Thin diameter runs lures deeper and improves bait presentation
  • Excellent clarity, minimum visibility

I should clarify that I mean

I should clarify that I mean it has poor abrasion resistance compared to other mono that is pretty much the same thickness, eg: 30lb super 100 (0.42mm) compared to 20lb ultra green (0.42mm). You almost sound like a Platypus rep there Sulo, have you actually fished with it or did you just read the packaging? If spool capacity or casting distance is the only aim then braid is the way to go. If mono is desired for it's other characteristics then I stand by my recomendation of platinum or maxima.

Maybe the braid you are using

Maybe the braid you are using is the problem? I run braid on three of my spinfishers (650, 850 & 950) without any problems. Crap braid like Fins or Asari will behave exactly how you have described but a half decent braid should behave well. I run Fireline Exceed on the 650 & Power-Pro on the 850 & 950 & never have any problems. I've used Platypus Platinum Braid on a few different outfits (only up to 15lb though) & it has performed very well, perhaps worth looking at down the track if you decide you want to give braid another run & want to stick with an aussie company.

cityflicker the braid i have

Fri, 2013-05-03 20:45

cityflicker the braid i have is the platipus platinum i find when i give it a big cast with a big sinker and a decent fillet bait it knots up half way through the cast and i have to cut around 20-40m of line off each time. i recon i only have about 150m of braid left on the spool with about the same of 20lb mono backing. ill stick to mono for now but none of my lure casting reels with braid have had any problems. i think its the way the braid packs onto the spool, it kind of bunches up in the middle with a slight gap at the top and bottom of the spool. i like the mono and i got a snag today with the new stuff and couldent break it off, had to lock the drag and hold the spool and give it a huge shock to bust it.... good stuff
