Leader to terminal knot -- your favourite and why. Teach the novices a bit
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-07-10 13:28
I started off fishing as a 5yo. Probably started tying my first hook about 7-8 (now at the age ALzheimers set in ) and it was probably a couple of grannies or something stupid.
Progressed for a very long time to the locked blood knot but have now settled into the Uni knot for most situations. Easy to tie and can be done "blind" in the night (or with my failing vision LOL).
Obviously I use others but the question is your favourite, most used.
Even I would be interested but novices should love this sort of thing.
Cheers
Neels

Blood Knot
Gotta say I use the blood knot mostly as I haven't had much practise with other knots. I find it kinda hard to understand Geoff Wilsons knot book. Then again I've not had a knot slip yet?

Uni!
Uni knot for me as well (when using mono lines). Very simple and easy to tie. Never had one slip in lines between 10 and 120lb.

I use the double uni and have never had a drama.
When tying mono or FC leader to braid I just make sure that I make about a dozen or so turns in the braid side.

True Bodie, not the best for
True Bodie, not the best for casting ............ but I trust myself tying the knot.
Most of my fishing is trolling or bottom fishing from the boat, so not a real problem
Never had any success in getting the bimini together, probably just need to get some real life instruction.

If you want try the Albright as a lead up to the Bimini. Albright cast better than a double Uni, IMO is easier to tie.
As for the Bimini, 6 months ago no hope, 4 months ago crap, 2 months ago OK and love it now. It is not as hard as what it appears. Actually easy once you get the tension thing sussed. As for tying it off. Go to You Tube, bimini and check them. Wait for the bloke with the South African accent. Piece of pie.
But not on the water. If something fail out there back to the Albright.
cheers

Cheers Neels,
I will look up the albright............. something to practice on while watching the cricket. Sh*t weather at the moment makes fishing unlikley so might as well get the practise in

50 -70 turn bimini to a slim
50 -70 turn bimini to a slim beauty down to a perfection loop for lures or a locked blood knot for hook, for GT's I go a 70 turn Bimini twist to a GT knot and a thumb knot (recently acquired) at the popper/stickbait, haven't yet converted to twisted leaders yet but they're def a stronger leader system. Went to the GT knot recently after witnessing
the slim beauty fail a couple of times, I steer clear of the albright (even the improved version) nowadays due to failure on casting outfits costing me a few fish.

Have the Albright let you down on "not GTs"?

Yeah it has Neels, but only
Yeah it has Neels, but only on casting outfits where the knot is repeatedly run back and forth through the guides.

I thought this was a
I thought this was a discussion about joining leaders to terminal gear??
Anyway, for joining leader to swivels etc I use a Uni knot, easy to tie and never failed.
For joining leader to braid either a PR or FG knot.

Double and single uni's
Double and single uni's i love. But this works well. Double over the mono leader and pass the braid through the loop. wrap braid around both legs of the leader about a dozen times, then pass back through the loop, pulkl tight. Sorry about the bad picture!

Spider hitch and Uni
Spider hitch to create a double in mainline ( I have never mastered the Bimini), then Uni to terminal tackle. I fish within the capabilities of my gear, so rarely suffer knot failures. In fact, I sometimes wish the knots were not so good when trying to bust off a snagged rig!

Albright...
...never have had dramas on overhead casting gear. Holds up all day long while flinging lures repeatedly. Spinning outfits are different story, hlokk (Matt) can tell you about the problems I've had with albrights and spinning reels! Rather than learn a new knot, I just avoid eggbeaters!
But, yeah, original question was what terminal knot...uni for me, unless it's a small lure on heavyish leader...then go the perfection loop. For heavy trolling leaders attached to swivels/split rings/hawaiian clips, I use the same flemish eye/crimp that is used for multistrand wire.

I use a locked blood knot or
I use a locked blood knot or a clinch knot which is basically passed through twice before twisting then back through the two rings. I'm not too fussed about knot strength because i know i dont push my line rating that far, i fish about 60% of my lines capabilities usually unless i really need to crank something in.

bimini twist 2 leader - double uni knot
OR A GRANNY KNOT IN THE LEADER - THEN PASS THE DOUBLE THRU THE GRANNY AND TIE A UNI KNOT AROUND THE LEADER
