Not 100% sure but I don't
Not 100% sure but I don't think you are legally supposed to take a child under the age of one on a boat. Could be wrong but I heard it along the way. Something to do with lifejackets not being suitable I think.

Be sensible .. Please
Second time today i have responded to requests for info for submitting babies to the elements. This is worse as it invoves offshore. It gives me goose bumps. Get a grip guys please. Don't subject your valuables to unneccessary risks.

I got one from the boat shop
I got one from the boat shop near stock road markets.
People take babys on planes in cars, swan river ferries, to rotto and passenger ships, as long as there is common sense, care and responsibility why not take your young one out.
Your not an Italian skipper are you?
Mine won't be out till 2yrs old

To be honest Vince
I had all of my kids out before they turned one.You of course you dont take them out on crap days but we have cruised from mindarie to hillarys for a couple of mothers days.Grayzeee i have a small lifejacket i am happy to pass down if you want.I feel safer taking my kids in the boat than driving down the shops surrounded by cars driven by possibly high as a kite or half drunk p platers in v8s ect.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

OK But I will go for a smoke while ...
The females in my family debated this issue with you. Seriously though mate I stand by what I said. I still shudder at the thought of what i feel is irresponsible behaviour in subjecting infants to such a risk. The older you get the more informed you get through life experiences mate. Don't subject yourself to hindsight mate. When reality bites.....It's too late then.

Life in general is a risk Mate
I would never put kids at risk at sea but im am just saying that the risk i expose them too on the water is more controlled than driving to the shops or letting them ride the bikes on the driveway or taking them down the park on a summers day.I can go on but i think you would get the picture. The females in my family have never had a problem with me taking them so i have no need to debate with the females in yours.
If you dont experience anything you will never learn from them.I have taken my kids fishing on busselton jetty and marroning at harvey weir and fishing at hill river does that make me an irresposable father or a great father i dont know but it never did me any harm as a kid and i hope my grandkids get to come along as well one day

Choosing a life jacket
Size and weight
Infants: because of the varying weight distribution of babies it is difficult to put flotation in the right places; children less than about a year old cannot be adequately catered for and should not go afloat.
For older children, there are three main things to look for:
the weight range on the life jacket's label agrees with the child's weight;
the life jacket is a snug fit (loose life jackets work poorly); and
the child is comfortable while wearing it.
Guess it's not saying you can't but you shouldn't?

For about $60 you can buy
For about $60 you can buy life jacket for infants up to 9kg at whitworths. My baby girl had her first fishing trip at 7 days old and has been in the boat about 20 times since her birth in August. I have a 6.5mt boat with a good cabin. She just lays on the bunk and really enjoys the rocking motion of the boat. The first few trips were just chasing squid around Dampier, but she has now been out to the patch and witnessed big mackeral and cobia coming on board.

Jackets
I had this discussion at the boat ramp with the marine safety guys during an inspection one day.
i was taking my son out, he was about 6 months old. He had been coming out with us since he was about 1 month old.
The smallest life jackets you can get are for 9-10kg.
Legally, the marine dept doesnt classify them as a person until they are 12 months, so from a legal perspective you dont have to a life jacket for them. At least this is what i was told. This really sucks, and we always carried the 10kg jacket with us just in case.
What i also bought was a ski jacket (from BCF). Its not a PFD1, but fits a lot better than the 10kg PFD1, and my son actually liked wearing it, and even swimming in it.
We never strayed far from the coast and only in good weather.
We did find proper life jackets from o/seas, however they were not Australian certified.

cheers guys , thanks for the
cheers guys , thanks for the pm's.
I have to say , I fully agree allrounder. I'm not about to put the little one in any dodgy situations at sea, but if you constantly worry about what could happen.... well , you'll never do anything.
Mum wants to get out as well, so , as long as all precautions (precorshens) are taken, I really don't see a problem.
little island first , if she can handle that , then the trench. (jk)
