Light reel
Submitted by 7739ian on Wed, 2008-09-03 09:52
Any recommendations on a light spinning combo for boat use - KG's etc? I bought a Shimano Slade SL 1000 and took it to Shark Bay - should have left it there - too light and the line kept getting caught under the bottom of the spool - a cheap piece of poo.

Last time I was in Perth I bought a Shimano Exage 2500RA with an Ugly stick Gold USG-SP46L for catching Whiting, Herring, Skippy etc when I visit my bro in Esperance. Cost around $240 spooled with 10lb Finns PRT I think. I use it everywhere now such as sqidding, Blue Salmon, throwing chromies at small Tuna schools, Top li'l combo and top fun.

Good choice Sam
I like the new Shimano Stradics, but you are looking at just under $200 for the reels alone.
Ian, I am sure the guys at Oceanside and the Tackle Shack will have something to suit.

My little spinner is a Diawa
My little spinner is a Diawa Caldia Kix 1500...cost me $220 two years ago, has copped an extreme flogging, and hasn't missed a beat. Loaded first with 4lb Fireline, now has 5 lb Power Pro braid. Mostly used for herring/skippy/salmon trout but on occasion has got dolphinfish and proper salmon. Got some rat YTK's on it last weekend, which absolutely made it p*ss, but it did get the fish!
This is the only spinning reel I use...prefer baitcasters/overheads for all heavier work, and I highly recommend it.

Nice reel, cheap price , braid friendly, ht100 drag , what more do you need !
I have a freams KIX 1500 for cod and yellow belly cost aroud $180 has 7 kilo's of drag if you need it sweet smooth reel tho,
if you go Daiwa make sure it's a "real 4" reel with digi cut gears,
if shitmano, then go with the paladin gears .

As said Daiwa excellors,
As said Daiwa excellors, Shimano: seido's, saros or stradics are also good.
I use a slade and don't have any problems with line being caught under the spool. When is it happening?

Every
3 or 4 casts - bad on 5lb line - worse on 2lb - tried different lines. It may be my action but i had a cheap Shakespeare that used to do the same - now in the drink off Pardoo.

try big boss
we have 9500s and 7500s and they do come in a few smaller sizes.the 7500s can handle 6 kg pinkies in shallow water and caught bigger out deep loaded with 50 lb braid (a bit overboard on line class) but it works

Thanks all
At the end of the day i am starting to think as i have 2 of the 8500ss which are magic reels i will stick with what i know and try and find a used 5500 or 4500. The Slade is up for grabs free - maybe i have a casting action that doesn't suit it.
After Russ got me thinking on this course i experienced a moment of guilt for running over a crumbed snag that was hitching at the Badgi road house a couple of weeks ago - not a mate i hope.
