live bait install
Submitted by barradiction on Wed, 2018-02-28 19:57
Hi all
Just purchased live bait pump to install in my haines. I already have 2 bungs the upper I will use for the inlet with a strainer my question is the original hole is 22mm I need to ream it out to 26mm. Do I have to coat the inside of the hole with a sealer. I'm using sikaflex around each flange nut but do I seal between the nuts with something to prevent rot.

If you are sealing the cut edge of fibreglass?
Assuming you are reaming out the fibreglass to take the larger fitting, the best thing you can do is use 24 hr ( Super Strength) Araldite. This is from a very experienced commercial fibreglass boat builder. Mix it up and work it hard into the freshly cut face of the hole. Allow it to set, then put your fitting in and use sikalflex to just seal for water leaks. The Araldite seals the actual fibreglass. This is also highly recomended for sealing any penetrations where you have a wood core in a glass boat--drill the hole slightly oversize, seal the edges with araldite, allow to set, then seal your fittings in with whatever you want for waterproofing.

Epoxy
Epoxy and don’t be shy with your application . That sort of area Will REQUIRE more than one coat. Think of two even three coats, a little care and effort here will save you a whole pile of headaches further down the track. In 25 years of working on boats with epoxy I’ve never seen, been happy with just one coat. FR 251 from Fibreglass and Resin sales in Welshpool will do the trick . Please cover yourself up when using this stuff....
