Live bait rig suggestions

Hey guys, im off to hervey bay in october for a weeks fishing. Ill be spending atleast 4 days on the jetty there live baiting and spinning for trevs, mackies, tuna, queenies, and whatever else.

Last time I was there was really my first experience with live baiting (easy to jig up the bait from around the jetty). Anyway, we were just putting the hook through the back of the bait and chucking it out. This had a few negatives, the bait didnt last long, and the mackies kept biting off the tails and missing the hook.

So getting to my point, what live bait rig to you guys suggest. I'm thinking i might try a bridle rig, with a stinger hook connected by 80lb BM tough trace.

Look forward to hearing some suggestions

Small hooks are the key

Allows the livebait to swim much more naturally, doesn't weigh em down and the live much much longer, only just pin em with as little flesh as possible - the key is to attract strong bites and even small hooks will hold well when set

Thanks mate, I'm pretty pumped. If the water is clean it should be pretty good fishing, last time we caught quennies, school mackies, tarpon, 1m+ flatheads, and saw some huge spaniards swimming around. Didn't toss any soft plastics around last time, think they could dominate that pier. Also got two days guided out of the bay and a day spinning for tuna off the rocks in 1770... Can't wait!!!!

A live bait style hook onto

Tue, 2012-08-21 07:17

A live bait style hook onto a split ring, then 4-5 inch of single strand wire haywired to another split ring with a treble lightly pinned through the tail. Adda swivel to the top split ring  so the fish doesn't roll out the treble mid fight.

^ Awesome, that sounds like a winner. Will the wire effect the amount of hits though? I was thinking a similar rig with heavy flurocarbon.

have you tried Bridle rigging your live baits?

simple legth of bite leader, either wire or fluro and a live bait hook.

all youll need is a lacky band and a bait needle.
