looking for new ground
Have been fishing some new ground of late, with some very promising results. Have found an area of ground probably passed by many, we have been sounding out the holes and edges for the last few trips. And this area gets bigger and bigger. We have had 9 dhuies 4 dropped fish and 7 released, in three trips .All dhuies, don't seem to get any other species. All fish are dark in colour. for the newbie fisho's trying to get a handle on things put in the hours driving around sounding things out ,and the rewards will come .Some of the best fisho's this site has spend many hours driving and watching the sounder ,and they all come up with fish . I still think there is a lot of ground holding some good fish, in this day and age with all the pressure from fishing, to find ground untouched holding numbers of fish is a great achievement and the fish are just a bonus. I love the hunt, finding that little rock ,lump ,edge or hole that hasn't seen a line pass by. Look at Ryan T the fuel time and hours, and he comes up with the goods. Fishing pioneer with some great achievements to his name, so good luck with the hunt and look forward to some stories and pics.

OK....I have updated my profile and am ready for advice. When i fish 15-17 meteres off the back of the 5k i always take home a feed of harleys, black arse or skippy.
I have been trying out deep lately and consistently have no luck. I have tried 30, 40 & 50 metres! Should I start at 25 metres & basically map the area off the back of GI first? Look for pinnacles, large depth changes?????
Really would like to hook into legal Pinkies......recommendations on rigs, length of leader, type of bait?
What about Berley.......do I still use it when fishing greater than 20 metres?
Available on weekends to deckie or use my 490 to learn from the masters. Cheers all, Ben

Info!
Ben,
The 38-45 m area behind GI has plenty of lumps and they produce fish but you need to sound around and find them. The ones that are 2m-4m high are the better lumps/less pressured and the key is to have many lumps and work the "lump list" to find where the fish are biting.
The lumps and broken ground out further in the 50-60m is good also, spending time sounding around and fishing small to medium structure is the go....plenty of reconaisanse dropping is work a try also!
Pink snapper, the back edge (outer) of 5FB has periodical lumps in the 20-28m mark and the (Inside) edge is good also but find the lumps. Plenty of berley (yes in 20m plus of water) will help and also bring around skippy/sambos/dhu/KG's etc....anchoring being the way to go over drifting for me.
The best time is morning & arvo and have a floatong bait that wafts down aswell as a bottom rig....mix it up!
Hope that helps!

Thanks Ryan. I've had my best luck anchoring but started drifting as that seems to be everone's norm. Do you use a paternoster rig? If so how long a lead & distance before first hook & 2nd? I've tried several types of rigs but seem to have my best luck with a paternoster rig. I found some nice lumps in the 20-28 metre mark but no luck last Sunday...but was trying to drift over the fish.....wind had come up & even with sea anchor kept missing them. They were right on a set of lumps between cray pots with weedy bottom around them. Kept drifting in the weed, losing bait & never even seeing the bite. Now I wished I had just anchored up. Cheers for the support. Ben

No probs Ben,
For Pink snapper & Mulloway i anchor and use a sneeled rig setup. For everything else i drift and use a patternoster rig. The size of my KG patternoster rig is smaller than my big bottom fish rig. I also use a driftbaiting rig that works well in calmish conditions and slower drift speeds in depths between 20-50m!
My patternoster rig in general are "approx" 40cm between sinker & dropper and my dropper length 30cm.
The close in lumps in that shallower depth hold fish but many are barron also.....use your sounder to aid. The ones that hold fish will generally take the anchored baits either a driftbait rig/floater rig or patternoster rig. Mix it up with berley helping too as there's many fish that roam!
All the best!

The Quest!
Good to see your onto some new stuff again Paul and we are so alike in that quest to find more/new/fresh seemingly untouched grounds. I love a feed of fish for sure but the feeling of exploring and the success that it brings means so much more that just going fishing for the ice box!
Last but not least, your a very knowledgable angler that steps outside the square also......i admire that!

Trick
One little trick to find more ground is when you travel to a known spot do not follow your gps track line exactly, travel along side of it at different distances so you are not covering the same ground each time
eg--this time travel 100metres to the north of the line and on returning do the same but south of the line, next time make it 200metres and so on.Always keep one eye on the sounder and be prepared to retrace your steps if you see something that looks interesting.Sometimes finding a lump may be the difference between turning right or left when lining up for another drift.
Hope this helps John

Good advise John, Bob always heads to
his spot but we never seem to get to THE spot as he goes along he just looks at the Sounder and all I hear Berty have a look at this, these blokes are flying past us and they all have missed some damn good ground, so usually we drop a line in and whamo we have caught a nice fish, do a couple of drifts, then pull sea anchor in and start off again to THE spot but once again, all I hear look at this, he always jokes there's a fish down there, quick get your line in and it starts all over again. The fun of fishing.
ps.. Bob has a furuno sounder and transductor is build into the hull and he can read the depth at 35knots.....no bubbles.

I travel with the lawrance
I travel with the lawrance sounder on, as it will pick up bottom at any speed, I zoom in on the bottom 5m and watch the sounder while travelling between spots .Anything that flairs up or rises I will mark. I don't stop as I am usually on a mission to some other place, but next trip or whenever in the area again, I will check it out and sound around the mark. This I do with the furuno as it is much more sensitive. I have probably got 20 marks which I need to get to and check, but you seem to run out of time when on the water. I have in the past found some great spots, some months after I originally marked them..

Speed
Having a sounder that reads at speed is the key. Nothing worse than having to go slow to get a decent bottom picture.

I can sound at 25kn easy
Furuno 620. I think that the placement of the transducer has everything to do with it. Turbulence is the no no. I have found that mucking around with the placement away from the straicks (spell check please)and also away from the prop giving you clean water works well for me. Also the leading edge being higher than the trailling edge is a must. Im probably stating the obvious but.
