lss-2 transducer

 ive just installed my stucture scan tranny after a year, my question is what did you do with your yellow cable. all the info i have says go to a on/off switch. any opinions

 Are you installing just the transducer or the sonar hub thingie?   My simrad (processor) power cable has yellow,  blue, red and black wires, but I only connected the red and black.  I got the impression that the others were to be used if you were running multiple units and wanted one to to power up all units.

 yeah the hub aswell, by my research the hub draws power so the yellow needs to go to a on/off switch but some research says the yellow connencted to the yellow from the skimmer tranny means when head set turned off the power to the hub turns off, way to complecated

Hey mate. I installed mine in a rush, and only jsut got back into it last break to tidy it up. You will love it once working thou..

 

Anyhow, the yellow is basically a trigger wire. You can either take it to a "on/off" switch so you need to manually turn it off or on. OR, you can take it thru to the yellow wire that is coming from the same cable that powers your HDS unit. This will act like the ignition of ya car and "start" the sonar hub up as soon as you turn the fish finder on.

 

Its early morning and only on 3rd coffe, so if no sence is made, let me know and ill try draw something up for ya :)

As per T Bone the yellow wire can be used to switch on the hub on (from switching on the sounder unit).  Doesn't have to be used though, I just have a separate switch for mine as sometimes I just turn on the sounder unit to have less power draw.

 So does the yellow wire of the sounder unit need to be connected to anything,  or just connect the two yellows together?  And I take it the sonar hub still has to be connected to a power source (ie red wire to the instrument panel?  I don't actually have a unit yet, but plan on getting one...)

yeah + and - wires to power/earth as usual the yellow wire is a "wakeup" (i.e. switch on) wire only rather than power.

Just connect the yellow wires (yellow to yellow) for anything you want switched on. i.e yellow wire sounder to yellow wire structure scan unit will switch on structure scan unit when you power up the sounder.

Or yellow of GPS to common connection point/bus with yellow of sounder and yellow of structure scan unit will power up the lot when you switch either the GPS or sounder unit on.

If you don't want to use/connect the wake up feature just tape off the yellow wires and don't connect.

 Hi guys,

What angle did you use to determine the transducer position. The installation manual isn't very clear. All I can find is that it must 1m to the port side of the prop and 75mm to the starboard side. If it is this close to the prop surley it would cause interferance if it was transom mounted.

Gilly I have mine setup the same way and potentially have the same problem.  Does your motor block your signal to the LHS of your structure scan transducer?

I seem to get way better definition out the RHS

 at this stage i havent noticed a issue, does it still get the motor if its trimmed up slightly. the small test i did sunday seemed to work fine and doesnt interfere with the motor at all

Its kind of confusing as the beam angle of the lss2 is 3.2deg which is very narrow so it must be sending out a beam either side ?? I have a feeling it may be a flat beam of 3.2 deg out each side rather than a cone like the normal transducers

 That is the bit I can't work out. Instead of a cone the beam is more like a fan according to Lowrance. If it is like a fan the specs say that it operates to a depth of 300 feet and will "fan out" either side to 300feet. Simple maths gives an angle of 45 degrees either side of the transducer. All the installation photos I have seen on the net including these clearly show that the prop would block the beam? but they don't! why not?

 i went out and trimmed my motor to the standard position and i believe there is enough room between hull and leg to shoot through, if the motor is trimmed down i imagine there would be interference

 I think it gets through on my boat but doesn't get a full spread on the LHS so I miss a bit of detail.  Not too much of an issue because if I really want to look at a structure I keep it on the RHS of the boat

i first had mine on the stb side of the prop (400mm or so) but it was hard up, side by side of my 50/200 for the 2D. When i went t o try and enter in the 2D part number to the sounder to "marry" them up, i couldnt work out what it was called in the HDS unit. Long story short, they peanuts gave me a DSI transducer from a elite unit so it was playing silly buggers. Also, with the trim tabs i was getting distortion. Long story short, i have now got the LSS2 on stb side, and the 2D on port side about 400mm apart> when im just idleing around, i have it trimmed up some, but never really noticed a great deal of difference if trimmed all the way down either. When i turn thou, i get a lot of "fuzz" along my centerline of structurescan. i hate to say it, but when went out last time, i was getting better information back from the old school 2d than the new stuff in 40 - 50m.. But it was about 3m of swell..
