Mackerel Islands Report August 2010
Submitted by Bones76 on Sun, 2010-08-29 21:46
Another August another Mackerel Islands trip... Fished new islands, found new ground - managed 32 fish at last count, over 7 great days, majority on lure, sp or jig. All fish, with exception of 1 or two trout kept for dinner were returned.
Trolling produced a marlin out wide, many mackerel, cobia, tuna and BIG Rankin on a lump which came up to 7m...
The light tackle action in close to various islands produced fantastic sessions on golden's, small GT's, mackerel, spanglies, queenies etc etc ....
Heavy spinning failed to produce a big GT, after a lot of effort, but we were kept entertained on many other good fish...
Great trip - planning for next trip has begun.

Thanks Tim ! All the rankin
Thanks Tim !
All the rankin were taken on the troll over the same lump - great fun especially with tuna, macks and cobia adding to the list from the same spot.
Alfred - that huge cod, nicknamed VW due to it's size, along with a mate and a large number of very big noah's all hang about 500m from shore under a mooring waiting for fish scraps which are dumped each day... Pictures don't do justice to the pics in terms of size...
Mako - billfish are there... In 2 short sessions (one morning last year and a morning this year) we raised 4 (all small). No one puts in the effort - mind you with the jigging and casting that can be done in closer we only give it a small amount of time.
Now to have a rethink about my gear and plan another...

Hope there is a few billies still around next week. I'm fishing the line class comp there and the skipper just loves trolling all day. Gonna be a handful on 6 and 8
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

G'day Tim - marlin was caught in 62m... not that far out to hit this depth. We generally head north to Penguin Bank before putting skirts out (with hard bodies trolled out to this point).

Relative to what?
62m depth from the mainland is a fair haul, from Thevenard its a bit more manageable but its not like the west side of Exmouth where it drops and drops just offshore.
Nice fishing bones76!
