Magpie Debate

 Just putting it out there.

Great White kills ........ they are protected and when you swim in their water you take that chance.

Magpie blinds toddler...... they are protected and you take your chances whenever in their territory and yet they kill the bird.

Ther is something wrong here you be the judge,

Magpies

tom i think if they could locate the shark that has attacked then they would destroy it, once an attack has happened they actively try to locate the shark in that area.

Magpie dead really

Thu, 2017-09-14 16:54

Did they kill the magpie, how did they know which one it was, they are all black and white and at nesting time the males will all swoop if you come near their nests in my experience. Same as great whites if they are hungry and you are near they will take a bit out of you to see if you are eatable.

Solution, stay away from magpie nesting areas (read signs) stay out of water read sign Great whites inhabit this area.

Pretty simple really.

Signs?

Thu, 2017-09-14 18:06

That's great that there are signs warning of magpie attacks. But not all that useful if the magpies aren't reading them too!

I mean, when the bird is scouting around for a suitable nesting location, does it say, "Oh here looks good...wait. There's no sign to warn humans...OK, keep looking..."

Comparing magpie attacks to shark attacks is also laughable. We choose to go in the water...we also choose to walk outdoors in public spaces. But humans are a terrestrial species, and it's more realistic to assume they should be able to safely.

Another first world problem

Thu, 2017-09-14 18:56

The kid had eye damage. Get rid of a few magpies just to make sure the one who had the skills,  or back luck, to hit the kids eye. Problem fixed for kids into the years ahead.

If that was one of my kids I'd be devastated but would accept it for what it is. Seeking to have just one of probably hundreds of Maggies in that park shot to once again appease the masses is bullshit. I'd love to see proof they got that exact bird anyway, it's an absolute joke.

Agree.

Fri, 2017-09-15 11:22

I agree Russ/Sandy, but if my grandmother was attacked, robbed & raped by some low life then I would want that low life put down so he couldn't do it to anyone else.
Do you think that would happen ??
I don't think so, lock him up for a while till he pretends to be rehabilitated then set him free on the public again.
Hmmm why didn't they do that to the poor Maggie that was just trying to do the natural thing and protect it's young??? IMO....
I guess what I am saying is that as a society we have our priorities all screwed up. if it's not human then get rid of it because it's evil, if it is human then let's give it another chance to go back out & do the same thing.
The joys of being the "master race"......

But if we kill everything that harms or potentially harms, there wont be any people left for the magpies to swoop.

We have about 4 generations of magpies around my house and they are truly an amazing bird. They are really smart and they can mimick horns, dogs, alarms.... for a boring looking bird, I really love them.

No need Timmy

Thu, 2017-09-14 21:48

however I do agree that the bird should not be hunted and killed nor would I like this to happen to one of my own kids. I very much doubt this is/was a rouge Maggie out to hunt eyes alone. Warning signs should be adhered to and kids should be aware of dangers throughout the change of seasons and there environments. This is a freak incident and should be treated as such ,nothing more. PPL should stop trying to find something to blame because shit does happen ( no offence intended) I have experienced my fair share and will continue too and that is the way life rolls. Hopefully the young one and family, power on with life and enjoying the awesome outdoors we have here.

Eggs

Fri, 2017-09-15 08:56

When I was at primary school we always had magpies swooping us. If it became a big problem and they new what nest it was from they would simply destroy the eggs. Eggs gone, no more swooping.

Stupid action to kill the bird.

When they interviewed some people at the park on the day this latest event happened there was some absolute moron who said something to the effect of "they really should section off an area to make it safe from magpies". What....how the hell do you do that. How about fencing off an area from people. Alot easier. But noooo. That would mean that people would need to be responsible for their own actions.

For the record, Im sorry for the kid, but absolutely love magpies. Should be our state bird. Best sounding call of the local birds I reckon...even better than Kookaburra's.

Magpies have been swooping for ever, I used to get swooped heaps as a kid walking to school and back. Only ever heard of one person being injured and that was when the Maggie hit in the forehead. We'd just hold our bags above our head and make a run for it as most of you would have.

Fri, 2017-09-15 18:17

reading these comments makes me think, when my daughter was attacked by a dog and her face was ripped to pieces which required 80 stitches the dog should have been left alone. yes this is a dog doing what comes naturally to protect what is its. let it live and do the same to someone. yes there is a diff between a dog and a bird but both have caused harm to human. some animals just get a bit to agressive  and something need to be done.

In that circumstance hopefully the dog was destroyed as they form close bonds with humans and should not be given the idea it's ok to attack humans. They are totally reliant on us to feed and care for them. Wild animals on the other hand are all about total survival.

My son was swooped when he was about 5 and he was traumatised it drew blood on his blonde head.He liked to walk the golf course with me at Preston beach.I was young and fast so I carted a tennis racquet and batted a few as they tried to swoop it stopped happening real quick.Magpies learn real fast.It didnt do any lasting harm but shook them up .I remember going to primary school in Gosnells and it was a real problem this time of year.If you put sun glasses on the back of your hat it slows them down a bit

Sat, 2017-09-16 16:13

I feel for the kid & the family & I'd be shattered if it happened to one of my kids but as has already been said, shit happens & there isn't anything that can be done about that. For those that want to kill the bird in question: How are you going to identify the right bird? For those that think they should all be culled: There's bloody millions of them, so good luck with that.

People need to realize the world is full of dangers. If you're so shit scared of everything & think it should all be controlled, do the rest of us a favour & spend the rest of your life indoors. Leave the outdoors for those that can appreciate it & accept that being outdoors comes with risks no matter where you are or what you are doing. Take the wildlife out of the wild & you're left with nothing.

The big threat now to the human race is sharks & fkn birds??? Humans are the biggest danger to humans. If some people had brains they would be dead set dangerous.

Sun, 2017-09-17 14:30

Dammit where was eye during this thread!!!

Eye'll be honest eye was out in the shed making "mapie shield", the government are subsidising the first 1000 of them so get in quick....

They are $1000 bucks, thats a bargain....

To protect both eyes it will only cost you $1800 or you can just risk 1 eye, its a lot like shark shield though and it may actually attract the bird to your opposite eye...

Most of my family is poor and cant afford 1 but eye've handed some out to my favourite nephews, they seem to get used to keeping the other eye closed after a while for full protection....

Merman eye'll do you a discount...

Eye'm looking for a Perth agent, BJ & Uncle were quick to send me their resumes....

The Afl has been conducting trials and so far they said they haven't seen any magpie action in September since the trials began bloody ages ago.....

If the Japanese fishermen are smart they will hang around the likely impact area.
