making your own poppers

Hi Guys,

Going to attempt to make my own poppers, the thing I'd like to source first is dowel with a hole drilled down the centre. Went to bunnings earlier and couldnt find any.

Anyone seen this stuff about?

Cheers

broomstick in half, and then gluing it back together once you have run your wire through the centre. I find that you get less play that way.

i used to spin up big dumbell poppers on my lathe at home. with the holes i used to to use a 1/8 drill bit and araldite a split pin in, leave it over night to dry. I would then test the strength of it by hanging it up somewhere and hanging off it, i weigh 90 kilos and the split pin did no come out at all. Araldite is bloody strong stuff. Try that!

Dowel is usually in with the wooden mouldings. Might be only some stores that have the full range though?

Hi Ya,

Made some myself a few years ago.  Used about 20 or 30mm round jarrah I got from Bunnings.  Used jarah as it is much heavier than the wood they use for broom handles.  I also got from my brother (what I think) is stainless steel mig welding wire.  Put a 2" nail in a vice, wrapped the welding wire around the nail twice, put both ends of the welding wire (cut to length obviously) in the jaws of a hand drill and then turned the drill until the wire was nice and tight.  Came out looking real swish.

Cut the jarrah dowel to length making diagonal cuts to give it a sloping face to make splash.  When I drilled the end holes I also drilled vertical holes to intersect with them so that when I put in the glue the air in the hole had somewhere to go.  Filled the holes with araldite and pushed in the wires.

Haven't tried them out yet but the hook and tow points seem to be pretty strong.

Cheers.
