Man on kayak "terrorised" by "relentless" hammerhead - ???

If you saw the footage of this on the news yesterday you'll know why I put the  ??? in the subject line after the caption. The footage shows a hammerhead shark - which im guessing from the footage is about 2 metres long - swimming around this guys kayak its probably just come in to have a bit of a look at the kayaker. Everytime it comes close enough he tries to hit it over the head with his paddle and the splashing of the paddle just excites it. Maybe im wrong but i dont think that shark is the slightest bit interested in eating him i think its just excited about some comotion on the surface and thinks there may be a fish or two around busting up on the surface. Did anybody think that guy was being "terrorised" by a "relentless" shark as the news put it ?

Get hammers circling the boat all the time. 9 out of 10 sharks that come up to have a look are hammers, but we never get them on the winches. Catch heaps of grey nurses, black tips and thick skins but.

He probably realised that if the shark put him off balance he would end up in the water with it! Regardless of its size id rather not be in the water with an inquisitive 2m hammer!

He probably wasn't doing himself any favors splashing on the surface but I think I'd do the same thing in that situation. Very active shark

I agree shark looked full of beans

I also think the shark looked hyper active possibly all the splashing made it think it was amongst a school of fish but couldn't locate the fish.

I agree with a couple of other posts. It did seem like a perticularly irritated shark. Dont know how many times he hit it before he started filming, or if he was splashing around, unintentionally bringing it closer.

I must admit that in a yak, i would be smacking it too.

Just one of the reasons why I fish from a Jetski and not the Kayak anymore.

I like to know that the green start button will get the Ski away quicker than paddling.

I love hammers, they're sick.

I love hammers, they're sick. Doubt one that size would do any serious damage to him.

He should've put a hook in it, probably would have made it scream off

Observation and opinion

Sat, 2015-09-26 16:01

After watching the full clip I'll stick with my opinion about looking for food. Shark homes in on tail of yak every time yak is paddled. Paddling stops shark turns away as if looking for what is making all the commotion in the water. Shark speeds up looking for food that is making a lot of commotion in water as well as micro electronic charges which shark is attuned to, gets frustrated at not being able to find what is causing his sensors to go of the scale. .
