Jogging reels

hi all

Wanting to try my hand at jigging for the first time. Wanting to get a spin combo but unsure on the reel. I currently have a 8000 Stradic and wanted to know if that will do or do I need to upgrade?

8000 stradic fine for sambos

8000 stradic fine for sambos with PE4 or PE5.

For demersals, a 4000 or 5000 size reel with PE3 a bit better. Rod choice is key, need a parabolic jig stick.

For jogging, best you get some runners.....

Parabolic means it has a very slow taper and the whole rod bends.

you get some rods that are fast action. (tip bends first) these rods are generally more suitable for controlling top fish or shallow water or using soft plastics.

parabolic just means the whole rod bends with load, even down low near reels seat.

In my opinion John is absolutely correct when he says rod is key.

If you want a good jigging outfit spend time researching different rods go to the shops ask there ...load some rods up. spend a good deal of time working out exactly what rod you need. (site sponsor Ocenside and Complete Angler are great)
once that is done it will only take you 15 mins to work out which reel you need for your rod.

Personally my demersal jigging rod is worth 3 times what the reel is worth on it.

Interestingly, I have taken a few of my old rods that I hated (tip too soft, butt too short etc) and modified by either shortening the tip or adding butt length (dependant on the think I hated about them).

I now have some rods that are bloody nice to use and suit my needs, and cost me almost nothing to mod.

Also Shimano Terez look ok to me any thoughts?

And does the length matter much?

the two you mentioned are

the two you mentioned are both Ok but really both are more of a general purpose. Saltist hyper bait/jigging and Terez (which admittedly I don't know much about but look more of a casting/jigging/bait rod. (both heavy rods)
with Shimano and Daiwa it's not until you get to the higher end that you get the dedicated jigging rods.

Are you after demersal or sambos ?(big difference in rod choice)if it's demersals then you should be looking for a PE 1-3 rod.

Again complete angler have a huge choice and you will be able to see (and feel) the difference.

I started with a Jigging master sabre game which is/was great but wanted to take it further and have since upgraded.

I personally dont like parabolic rods for demersals. for seriola its a different story. for the price i like the shimino game type j. these are a mid/high taper rod and i rate it. think they are around $450 and i rate it as good as my saltiga 60sf which is also mid/high taper. I also use a temple reef mytho which is high taper and rate it very highly. if u go to one of the site sponsers and play with the temple reef and then a parabolic rod u will see what i mean. but thats in my opinion. some love the parabolic rods.
