Man lost at sea off Carnarvon
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2011-07-28 19:03
A man has disappeared just out from Pelican point at Carnarvon while swimming from the back of an anchored trawler to a dinghy that floated off after its rope broke.
The accident happened about 1.30 pm Wednesday. Carnarvon sea rescue's 2 boats along with another 5 boats taking part in the search along with a helicopter and fixed wing plane without success and again in crappy conditions this morning with 5 boats this morning.
We wil be out again tomorrow morning in what we hope will be the best conditions so far. The water has turned back to flood brown with zero visibility and is making things difficult

One did
One did, there was two of them, one reached the dinghy but the other one disappeared.. By the time there got the trawler engine started and anchor up he was no where to be seen.

One missing
There is only one person missing not two,one is bad enough.
The forecast for today is the best we've had since it started so fingers crossed we get a result.
The water police divers have arrived and will take over from the local boys who have done a top job so far.

Nothing
Did a full day sonar scanning with the water police divers and found three likely possibles that proved to be nothing after the divers went down. Will spend tomorrow [Sat] untill mid day and if nothing found the search will be called off except for scans along the beaches and mangroves.

Thanks
Many thanks go out to Nev, one of our members who comes up here regularly, for joining the search in shitty conditions from the first day in his boat White Knuckles. Bet he had some white knuckles hanging on the first two days because the conditions were not nice in a 10 metre Naiad let alone a 21 footer.
edit, Pick of the boats on day one was a 75 foot Sunseeker launch, magnificant. Was told its got twin 2000 hp donks and chewed 700 litres an hour during the search

Can only prey for a miracle
Can only prey for a miracle now by the sounds of it. Don't know what else to say? It must be hard on you fellas that have to do the searches as well? I feel for the family of the missing Gentleman also.

Numbers
We were scratching for numbers to crew the boats and man the radio due to members off on holidays, in jobs where its near impossible to get away for more than a few hours let alone days, 2 important ones in Perth for the annual conference[I was supposed to be down but other things came up],one in Kunnunurra and another in K city for a few days.
We got a call from a stranded yacht for a tow this evening and after being assured he was safe for the night , will be towed off at first light in the morning.

Divers
The water police divers have finished their job here and have left on the drive back south.
We covered the last of the ares earmarked for sonar survey by about 1100 this morning without any abnormalities showing up. The zone the sonar survey covered is someting like 4 square kilometres with a pass over each 30 metres giving an overlap of 5 metres incase the passes were too far apart.
This is separate from the areas covered by the other boats in yesterdays, Thursday and Wedesday line searches with up to seven boats in line abreast at one stage.
In the winding down of the searches all that will be done is a search of the mud bank to the south on town on hight tides dail and in all the small bays, beaches and mangroves by dinghy plus the land bits by 4x4 or quad bikes.
