Marlin Fishing
Hi All
I am off to ningaloo/exmouth in september and im chasing as much info and insight into trying to catch my first marlin from my boat.
I am a noob when it comes to trolling as we havnt really done it before.
I will be taking a couple of outfits set up for just trolling for macks and hopefully a marlin. I already have a couple Tyrnos 30s so will be spooling them with mono Not sure weather to go 30lb or 50lb though? Do i have half a chance if a marlin does decide to take the lure on these reels or do i need to run 50w reels?
After reading most topics about it in the search function i will be dropping into Oceanside to get some richter soft oscars and soft grassys.
Can any one help me with what i will need? And some advice to a noob to help catch our first marlin
Cheers Jayce

Sails will be right be the
Sails will be right be the reef heading towards the gulf! Learn how to troll dead baits! Depends how wide you, and what size mono you have .... You can get blacks from 20kg all the way to 200 plus... And September is a little early for blues but you might be in with a chance of a very early season blue. Depends where you troll what what you really wanna do!
a hard days fishing still beats work

Agreed
there should be Sails everywhere by then along with smaller blacks.
When we were at Ningaloo last year (mid august) Sails were in crazy numbers. Sometimes packs of 4-6 were smashing our lures!
Get those richters and run them 15-60m behind the boat. Don't forget to have a hardbody out too (190mm Laser Pro or Xrap)

Soft grassys on 15kg mono.
Soft grassys on 15kg mono. 120lb leader. Work from 30 out to about 200m of water and you will miss most of the big girls although they do get in closer sometimes. Run about 7 knots and play with your spread to get everything running nicely. Should see a few little blacks. Drop into Bluewater for the up to date advice.

We will be staying at Lefroy
We will be staying at Lefroy for the first week so will be fishing out of there. Not really sure about depths we will be trolling and that sort of stuff as like i say im a noob to it. Its all trial and error to start with thats why im chasing advice.
So if majority of the fish are sails and small blacks we should be right running 30lb on 30 size reels? I have access to a few 50w but dont really want to ruin the sportfishing side of it if i can avoid it.

Much easier to drop back
Much easier to drop back baits on a Marlin or Saily than rigging swim baits or lures, most times they will grab it on the way past resulting is better hook-ups than lures

Only to a point. I don't
Only to a point. I don't recommend switching to people new to the game as it requires too much on visual contact first and then a steady head to call the shots. Not usually two things that are common to someone starting out. Lures will consistently raise and hook fish. Particularly the little blacks just crawl all over them. Hook ups will suffer a little but that's all part of the curve.

15kg mono is a safe bet,
15kg mono is a safe bet, handles most fish out there and the Tyrnos will hold 400-500m of 15kg which is good, I agree with dodgy on the switchbaiting my novices weren't up to it and we switched back to lures. don't rule out big spin reels on suitable 7ft boat rods either, especially if you do decide to try a skipping gar/ switchbait. I use Richter lures and rate them for sails and small blacks, bright colours are a winner.
