Marron Wellington and Stirling Dams

Hey guys,

Just chasing a bit of info re: Marroning in these 2 dams. Does anyone, or has anyone tried these dams this year?
Generally is there less people at these 2 dams rather than Harvey dam?

As it will be my first attempt at snaring this weekend, whats everyone opinion on technique on approaching a marron you have spotted without spooking them?

Been about 16-18 years since I last did it, back then you could use a scoop net in the dams!!

Cheers

Stirling Dam is now used for

Stirling Dam is now used for Perths drinking water so marroning is no longer legally permitted there. I have always found Wellington to be less crowded than Harvey, the average size of the marron is smaller but there seems to be more about and not being a trophy dam means the bag limit is larger. Snaring is great fun, you might stuff the first couple you try for up but once you have the hang of it you will get most that you try for.

Thanks,

Best I can tell there is no legal length you need to stick to for the Snare?

What do you guys generally use for your snare? Broome handle with some sort of Wire for the snare part? (I was thinking electrical single wire, or even the wire inside a computer network cable?

Snare pole.

Hey Bodie the best snare pole I ever had or used was an old 6'6" flick rod! Nice and thin at the business end less spooking the marron and I used telephone cable wire for the snare works a treat

Dont strip the wire, leave the plastic coating on as this slides better with the noose.

Also over the years I tried many colours and green is the colour I have settled on. Appears without any scientific backing that they dont see this as easy as white, black or brown.  I used an old glass surf rod as my snare pole. Just araldited the wire to the end. Despite being long it sometimes gave me the flexibility to not have to go into the water, hencing spooking them. Nowadays with LED technology I think the torches are to bright. Its better to use a dull torch, dont shine it directly at the bait but come in from the side. If you spot a marron dont shine the light more directly at it, as this also spook them.

Once you have the loop behind them I move the beam to the front and often they just walk backward onto the noose.

Good luck.

+1 to pretty much all of what crasny has said Bodie, don't strip the wire and I all so preferred just the good old dolphin torch as my light source, good luck hope you get a few.

Cheers
