Maths Guru help wanted

 Any smart fishermen out there able to roughly calculate the volume of water in Cockburn Sound. According to agency reports it is 100 klm 2 that would be surface area. I would suggest allow average depth 10 meters to make it easier.

Cubic or mega litres fine.

Leave it with you.

Area = 100km^2 = 100,000,000m^2

Volume = 100,000,000m^2 x 10m (deep) = 1,000,000,000m^3

1m^3 = 1,000 litres

Hence total volume = 1,000,000,000,000 litres

 Thanks again did realise the difference.

So the reason on getting an idea on this was to highlight the amount of sewerage waste water being discharged from Point Peron WWTP, given the premier has told me that it will continue to operate until at least 2030 by which time the discharge will double. The above figures suggest it is enough to fill Cockburn Sound and given it has been operating over 30 years it has already done that once. Given that samples for faeces taken this time last year were 12,000 times over the limit and they operated for 6 weeks last year with little filtration at the plant no wonder public are concerned.

Anyway just another way to visualise the size of the problem.
