lifters ???

Hi Warren not sure If you've got your termanology right, the lifters are not part of the heads, if the heads were stripped to replace the stem seals then I assume they would have re-assembled them to allow for re-fitting { unless  you are refering to the retainers and collets ??? then I dont understand why they would'nt have re-assembled them...}

If the lifters have been removed { which it sounds like they have been, these run on the cam} then it is of utmost importance that they go back on the correct lobe which they came off {did you mark them on removal ??}unless you are replacing them with new ones in which case they can go anywhere just make sure they spin when you turn the engine over...

not good to see people get ripped off like that. we got caught out with our boat as well running a mercruiser sposed to be a 350 chev but after a few overheating probs and head gaskets going we replaced the whole motor with a new one. found out the old motor was in fact only a bored out 305 that had some shonky work done on it. good luck with the rebuild sorry i cant help you out but can sympathise with you
