Metro Beach

Hi everyone.  After buying my first surf rod I really want to get some action. But I realised that I have got not much of an idea on where to use it and what to go for. I have heard floreat beach drain is good??? I do not have access to a 4x4.

if you have any suggestions please tell me what you will catch and how I should target them. I know some basic tailor rigs and know I should use mulies and a gang. Also know for salmon that you will catch most on lures.

the rod that I will be using is a Rovex air surf prime ASP 132. Reel is Fin-Nor Biscayne FS80 spinning reel. The mainline is 25lb mono. I will also have access to 30lb leader.

 North or south of river?

If north give Trigg or Scarborough a go for tailor, whiting, tarwhine, etc.

Lures on a 13ft can be done,

Tue, 2014-04-22 12:05

but will be hard work! Surf rod won't be the lightest for cast and retrieve. Short session until sunset can certainly be done though, then switch to soaking some baits. On a 13ft 6-15kg you will be looking at about 70g min lure weight with 25lb mono, or your cast will become difficult.

Suggest getting a rod belt if you will hold onto the surf rod for your sessions, or some pvc (50mm @ 1.5M) and a rubber mallet to set it in a holder. Set drag in case you get a stingray, shark or mulloway!

For some spots to try out the 13ftr, could try North and South mole, the length of the rod will help keep your line, rig and catch out of the rocks. This is a good thing. A gentle lob to cast will be all thats needed from the rocks. Careful not to overbalance and fall, make sure you don't rush anything whilst learning. Steady yourself before casting etc. tall rods can take some getting used to.

Swanbourne / swanbourne drain is worth a look too, that is further south than floreat, probably less packed too.

Could be worth a try this weekend Sat / Sun / Mon for some beach tailor. I normally find them more cooperative when the weather is aweful and the wind is howling. Thats just my experience. Can fish these conditions with a 13ftr but it will be hard work, cold and not necessarily pleasant! Have to check out the seaweed situation though. Floating weed can kill a session before it starts.

For rigs, tie them all in the same b/s line. Don't mix them up and you will get less tanlges. 30lb sinker drop and 30lb to hooks.
Rather than 15lb sinker and 30lb hooks etc. Tri-crane swivels tangle less than three way-swivels. Use a snap swivel for your sinker to allow easy changing of weights.

For sinkers, 5Oz will be needed this weeked, maybe a 6Oz. Check what your rod can handle and weight your rigs to suit. Makes casting easier if you operate in the rods sweet spot, rod may handle more than the weights above, just have to adjust casting power to suit ie back it off a little if overloading the rod.

Send me a message if you want and I will give you some tips for your rigs.

Cheers,

D80

I like to fish Floreat beach,

Tue, 2014-04-22 14:31

I like to fish Floreat beach, about 200m north of where the drain is. Hooked a smallish tailor (about 36cm) on Saturday evening using a standard paternosta rig with mulie on a 3 gang hook approx. an hour before sunset. Herring were also going off big time Saturday and Sunday.

yeah mate, I sometimes do the same with the single in the hope of a by-catch if herring although normally it doesn't produce so I generally stick to the tri crane swivel with the 3 gang off it. good luck

 I also use tri crane

Wed, 2014-04-23 19:25

I also use tri crane swivels. Most people use a long sinker trace and short hook trace like you have drawn however i do the opposite. I tie my mainline to the big eye of main swivel, then tie a hook trace approx 80cm long to the other eye of the same swivel, and then tie a sinker trace approx 30cm long to the remaining eye of the smaller swivel which hangs off main/bigger swivel. Have caught many tailor, mulloway and bronzies with this rig. Floreat beach is a great spot, just check the swell and weed situation. I usually fish 100m south of the drain - best capture being a 1.1m bronzie at that spot. Good luck!

Thanks for all the comments. Can't wait to test out the new rod, rig and beaches! I'm sure with all this information I can go down there and catch a few tailor.

Yep, its a long walk without one.

Try preston, secret harbour, madora bay. There is a sandbar running along the coast, 1st catch a tailor or hezza then put it on your 13ftr and send it out to catch you a nice big mulla.
