Whats up all,
with my boredom going on here in NZ and finding myself doing more reading up on marlin, i have came across a punch of posts that keep comming up referring to the late 90s and metro marlin , and how amazing the runs were..
can some one either point me in the right direction of where to find info on this and what happened etc etc...or just feel free to elbaorate.
one can dream of this happening again!

There was alot of fish in the trench and beyond in the late 90's, but I dont think the bloke who wrote the article Dumper posted is correct in what he says as regards Jap longliners.
In the late 90's the Japs were pushed out but were replaced by local boats straight away, there were up to about 30 or so including us kicking off around 98.
Quite a few boats came from Tasmania and Queensland.
Swordies were thick in the trench and stripies also though no one I know of landed them (even though our licences allowed them) other than the odd one.
The big marlin were released as they were protected and contrary to what was said at the time I reckon we caught about 50-100 swords to one marlin of any type.
Personally Im certain it was cyclical, as there have been no longliners working there for 5-10 years now so on his reckoning it should be pumping by now.
I have quite a few pictures from those days.

The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Slightly off topic,
But the Dec/Jan 08 Western Angler magazine has a write up about the first time a marlin was ever caught off Perth on rod and reel (1971).

We had a presentation last night at the PGFC social night by the one of the guys from REDMAP and this actually came up.
We were looking at some data around water temps etc and the 99/00 marlin season came up. Apparently it was a convergence of a number of environmental things which create a unique situation with raised water temps, heights and a few other things which drew in an abnormal number of pelagics that year.
