Look for birds

Saw heaps of schools today and the first indicator was always the diving birds.  I did find it hard to get close enough to cast though and they would go down pretty quick - didn't try trolling.  The terns are the ones to watch.  Pretty spread out behind FFB and the largest school was just south of Rottnest.  They were free jumping so was speccy to watch, ended up catching a small big eye (at least I think it was!). Always throw a casting rod in when chasing demersals this time of year.

For the stripeys and bluefin...

Thu, 2015-01-01 21:56

...you're dealing with fish that won't be much bigger than 7-8 kgs in metro waters...you can go right down to bream size gear, but your drag better be schmicko and be prepared to chase with the boat!

I trolled up a 7 kg SBT last month on a little pink skirt and a Calcutta which was half-filled with 10lb braid....was solo so had to fight fish and chase with boat at same time. Was pretty chuffed to get that fish...much more fulfilling than winching it in on 50 lb mackerel gear!

I'm no expert, but last time

Thu, 2015-01-01 21:57

I'm no expert, but last time out there south of Rotto in 30's there were schools underneath birds but easily spooked by motor.

We hooked up when a school passed us on drift so no engine to spook them. Caught on soft plastic round back fast using 5-10kg outfit.

Good luck.

Yesterday while we were out

Fri, 2015-01-02 10:35

Yesterday while we were out in FFB behind Garden Island seen tuna bust up, seen their humps splashing out of the water chasing white bait. We had numerous solid casts into the pack of tuna with our metal lures but no hits, also trolled a couple laser pros to no avail. :( Been harassed all day by wrasse and ended up with 4 squid for the day. Catching metro tuna would of been a lovely start to the new year!

Try casting different lures

Fri, 2015-01-02 11:26

Not sure if its the same in Perth metro but up north we used to see big schools of tuna regularly busting up. If they're not interested in the metals even if casting directly in front of fish try using soft plastics or something different to match what they are feeding on.

Had plenty of times where we didnt even get  hit on metals and then once changed to soft plastics or something like those pre-rigged swim shads we hooked fish straight away.  Just gotta keep trying something different until you find something that works.

They were smackin the day

Fri, 2015-01-02 11:39

They were smackin the day lights out of a small 40g silver micro jig the other day, retrieved fast along the surface and speed jigging. I usually retrieve as fast as the reel can possibly go, dont let them get a good look at the lure as these southern blues that are out behind ffb and surrounds are flighty enough as is. If you're going to troll try the small richter tornado jr

And then sometimes you do

And then sometimes you do everything right and still cant get a hookup! The very first boof near the boat is a missed strike on the lure but didnt get a sniff after that
