To make it work as a portable drive, you need to turn it off prior to plugging it into a computer's USB port. For this, on one side the Wireless Plus has a power on/off button that you press once to turn it on or press and hold for a few seconds to turn it off.

I ran a Seagate GoFlex 1TB USB 3 drive from the original Microsoft Surface no problems --it had one of those hybrid connections at the drive end ,( looks like two micro USb connectors together) probably to deliver power. I now run the same drive from a Surface Pro 3 also with no problems. I bought a 2Tb Seagate drive last weekend, using the same kind of connections, again, no problems? Wireless hasn't given me any problems, either, it found our HP printer and automatically connected to it, the first device that had ever done so.

Yeah my Surface Pro 3 runs all similar devices no issues. Actually quite like it, great when travelling.
