mindarie report
hey hey
headed out from mindarie today at 5am with workmate to try and get him onto his first size dhu.
after a bit of a dodgy start involving a cray pot on the lead line , we headed out to the bank. at any sign of birds , we'd set the skirts out , but wasn't to be.
a northerly current seemed to have quietened things down and i'd had no touches on artificials in the first hour while dave had got a few nibbles on bait. we tried the pots , but found it hard going.
after sounding around on our way out , we found some promising looking ground. first drop and soon enough , dave had a good take , and up came his first dhu. 60cm and the first score posted. with that , i relented and sent down a driftbait. had a couple of bites before hooking another dhu that went 70cm.
happy enough with that , we pushed out wider into the 90's but the dodgy drift made it a pain to position the boat , so back in to a previous mark that held good dhu's
i put down a tiki shad on the light plastic and waited for it to reach bottom when i heard dave shout " woah what the #$^& fish is that" . i looked round to see a decent meter long dolly buzz the boat all lit up electric blue fins and gold body. we threw in a coulpe of mulies as i wound up the plastic. the dolly smashed the bait and i saw it turn in the direction of my plastic , and the rod loaded up. cool . lots of big runs and jumps and a bit of hasty boat positioning had it up and into the net after a few mins. went 6kg. did want to return it but it was worse for wear in boat. it seemed tired when netted but went spas when we tried to do the photo. shame.
dunno why it was there , but a lot of coral spunk everywhere. wondered if it might have been cruising the lines???
dave then got a good hookup and got his fish up , only to say (again) what the hell is this? only a nice 4kg baldie , the cheeky beggar. (been after one for ages myself).
put the plastic down once more and got a hell of a hook up but after a few mins , it spat it , only to have another go for a few more mins , then it'd finally decided this bait wasn't worth the bother. bugger!
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Very nice non-FAD dollie!
Very nice non-FAD dollie! Pretty good size for Feb too. Dollie and baldie, now thats a combination that would be very hard to beat on taste! Both awesome fighting fish too (very different tactics of course)

Work
Nice work grayzee. Quick thinking to keep that dolly around, they usually go ballistic in the boat (net),

Well done Graham, we found
Well done Graham, we found it a bit slow out there yesterday until about 11.00 am when the fish came on for about an hour. It was bloody hot in the morning though!

it certainly was a warm one.
it certainly was a warm one. didn't help that my drinking water container had leaked on the way out.
it's amazing how dehydrated you get on a boat.
