I am so so sick and tired of people doing stupid things and then we have to go out and risk our lives to try and find them. I am sorry but anyone who went out in that weather today just to catch a couple of abalone need their head examined.
Our boats were out there in winds that gusted to over 50knots, not to mention the lightning, hail and heavy rain.
I make no apologies for my comment.

The abalone rules being as I
The abalone rules being as I understand it , a prescribed 1hr / 1 day a month are such which would also incite stupid behaviour...Good on you rescue boys for giving it your best shot

Thats how I understand it
Thats how I understand it too.
5 months of the year you can take abalone , but only for 1 hour on the first sunday of each month. (dumb)
Stupid people will do stupid things and thankfully we have lifeguards/volunteer sea rescue to try to save those lives.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

From what I heard on the news
From what I heard on the news he was visiting the country so obviously had no idea how to handle himself in those conditions let alone someone local. His friends or family (whoever he was with) need to answer some serious questions. Pathetic loss of life and very preventable.

We
need to ask the "Question", why do we have such rules on "Abalone".
I don't recall having such rules in the 70's.

Rules
The reason they chnaged the rules to one weekend a month from 6 weeks in a row was that people were coming down from asia for the 6 weeks. Taking all they could and selling it back home.

Can't say I ever heard that,
Can't say I ever heard that, and I think its a little far-fetched.
Staying 6 weeks in one of the least affordable cities in the world in order to take away a maximum of 20pcs which is a 1-week haul anyway? Technically you can only have 80pcs in your permanent place of residence so you can be nicked for having any more than 20 on hand on the way to the airport.
Fisheries WA brought in the current regs after the hot currents baked off all the abalone up at Kalbarri etc and they closed the season.

Got me stuffed while people
Got me stuffed while people risk their lives for abalone up there.....south coast season runs for 8 months, used to be all year. Surely if they wanted them that badly they could drive down and grab a feed at their leisure.
But I'm pretty glad that everyone doesn't...

Rice
and rags seem to the love of some 1 on this site. Every time there is an issue and it may involve some NON Aussie there is an individual that loves them.
Get over it.
If it's not "Crabs" it's "Abs".................
I sure as hell do not blame all of these type of people but look at the facts.

Good idea Uncle. An
Good idea Uncle. An inflatable lifejacket for use on the off chance you do get swept off the reef and can't swim very well. In this instance it would more than likely have saved this blokes life!!
Burley it and they will come.

the conditions were rough in
the conditions were rough in the morning, you would only go out if you had wetsuit, etc, certainly not in jeans/shirt like some did....
i read that one of the rescued guys is being deported as be an illegal overstayer, so some of those rescued had been here a long while....
mind you, even if you are a tourist, common sense would have made it obvious with the rough conditions you didnt go out without the right gear, and also if you didnt know about rips ,etc
the weather got a lot worse during the day, so the rescuers who went out later on certainly were taking a big risk.....
it was lucky we only had one person drown, and 17 rescued...it cetainly could have been worse......

Saturday
Looking at the weather from the Sea Rescue tower on saturday, was a good indication of what it was going to be on sunday. I agree with Iceman, ya gotta be crazy to be in that water just for a feed but ya just can't tell some people. Then some unfortunate folks have to go out & try & rescue them putting their own lives at risk.
cheers & be safe Rob

crap
I'd rather eat the crotch out of a skidded wetsuit than an abalone anyhow!!!! Taste like crap!! I certainly cant understand why someone would want to put there life at risk just for an abalone????
A jar of pickled crayfish or marron on the other hand!!!!!!!!
